The BMW 5 Series could be closer to its major update than expected, with a Reddit post appearing to show the redesigned sedan already being built at BMW’s Dingolfing assembly line. The heavily updated 5 Series is expected for the 2028 model year and could receive a more restrained front-end design alongside broader changes inspired by BMW’s Neue Klasse models.

BMW Is Rapidly Updating Its Lineup

BMW has introduced a series of major vehicle debuts this year, including new versions of the X5 and 7 Series, as well as the recently revealed combustion-powered 3 Series.

With the Neue Klasse philosophy now influencing the brand’s future designs, more significantly styled BMW models are expected to follow. The redesigned or heavily updated 3 Series and 7 Series have also made the current 5 Series look increasingly out of step with the rest of the range.

2028 BMW 5 Series Update Is Coming

The facelifted 5 Series has already been spotted during testing, while the M5 has also been seen being tested around the Nürburgring. The updated 5 Series is slated for the 2028 model year, although its premiere could take place relatively soon.

The timing would give BMW’s midsize sedan a new appearance to better match its smaller and larger siblings, which have already received their own updated designs.

Possible Production Preview Appears Online

The latest potential look at the upcoming 5 Series comes from a Reddit post by user u/Appropriate_Set_215. The user spotted what appears to be the updated model in a brief shot of the Dingolfing assembly line included in a presentation video for the new 3 Series.

According to the Reddit post, the image was “taken from an official BMW Group video showcasing the new 3 Series, which has been removed.”

Although the available footage is not high resolution, the vehicle in the background appears noticeably different from the 2027 3 Series. The deleted video has also already been downloaded several times after appearing online.

New BMW 5 Series Could Get a Smaller Grille

The most obvious change visible in the image is the front end. The large grille appears to be gone, replaced by a design that looks similar to the one on the 2027 3 Series.

The appearance also resembles recent renders of the updated 5 Series and could signal a return to more traditionally sized kidney grilles.

It remains unclear whether the vehicle shown is a standard model or an M Sport version. However, the apparent prototype features a new headlight design and a smoother-looking front bumper.

The rest of the exterior appears largely unchanged, although the updated 5 Series could also receive changes to its taillights and rear bumper.

Interior Could Follow the 3 Series and 7 Series

The exterior revisions may be accompanied by a significant interior update. The 5 Series is expected to receive treatment similar to the new 7 Series and 3 Series, including the Panoramic Vision display in place of a traditional instrument panel.

The update could also mark the end of the iDrive dial in the 5 Series.
