Car repair costs have risen sharply in recent years, with vehicle repairs increasing by an average of 60% between January 2019 and August 2026, according to data published by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

Car Repair Costs Nearly Double Inflation

The increase in repair costs comes as vehicle ownership becomes more expensive, with fluctuating fuel prices remaining a major concern for drivers. But the latest data shows that maintenance and repairs have also become a significant source of higher ownership costs.

According to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis data, car repair prices rose an average of 60% over the period from January 2019 through August 2026. By comparison, inflation averaged 32% during the same period.

The report attributes part of the increase to the growing amount of technology used in modern vehicles. Independent repair shops have been forced to invest in high-tech equipment and employ more skilled mechanics to service newer cars.

Modern Cars Require More Expensive Equipment

CNBC interviewed mechanic Ralph Czeisler about the rising costs. He explained that many modern vehicles require a laptop and specialized software for repairs, with some brands requiring specific laptops and subscription-based software.

“I have multiple computers for domestic, Asian, and European cars, and it’s very costly. Every year they make changes, and it costs more money and more money. And it’s getting very challenging,” says Czeisler.

Even routine maintenance can now involve additional costs. Czeisler said some modern vehicles require software to be reset after an oil change to return the oil-change interval to zero. In some cases, that can add $75 to the cost of an oil change.

ADAS Technology Adds to Repair Bills

The higher costs also extend beyond software and diagnostic equipment. The report says average collision repair costs have increased by 37.6% as ADAS systems have become mandated by law.

Windshield replacement is one example. What was once a relatively simple process involving new glass and labor can now require additional work because modern vehicles have ADAS cameras and sensors positioned behind the windshield.

Those systems must be recalibrated after a windshield replacement. According to Czeisler, the calibration computer costs $28,000, while the computer that operates it costs another $12,000.

As vehicle technology becomes more complex, the rising costs of specialized equipment, software and calibration have contributed to the sharp increase in car repair expenses documented between January 2019 and August 2026.
