The Volvo 240 is best known for its boxy design, practicality and reputation for safe, sensible and reliable transportation. But YouTuber Peter Bjorck has transformed a 1975 240 sedan into something far more extreme by fitting a Lamborghini Gallardo V10 in the middle and adding two turbochargers.
The Volvo 200 Series Became an Icon
When the Volvo 200 Series debuted in 1974, it was designed as a logical car to buy and own, offering owners dependable transportation without a focus on performance. The lineup remained in production for 19 years before its retirement in 1993.
More than 2.8 million examples were built, helping make the 200 Series one of Volvo’s most recognizable products. Although the V6-powered 260 models were not performance standouts, the arrival of the Turbo models changed that image, including through successful racing efforts.
A Volvo 240 With a Lamborghini V10
Today, the 200 Series remains a practical classic with plenty of examples available for projects. Bjorck chose a very different path with his 1975 240 sedan, turning the familiar Volvo into an extreme performance build.
Rather than simply modifying the original car, Bjorck installed a Gallardo V10 in a mid-engine configuration and added two turbochargers. The result is a running machine that retains the appearance of a classic Volvo while being built around a much more powerful setup.
The Mid-Engine “Waffle”
Bjorck calls the V10-powered 240 sedan the Waffle. The car rides on a bespoke chassis, while the rear end has been widened substantially, making it far removed from the proportions of a conventional 240 sedan.
The project has been a work in progress for the last couple of years and has recently completed shakedown runs. According to The Drive, the Waffle completed an 1/8-mile run in 5.3 seconds at 137 mph.
The car still required additional fine-tuning to extract as much power as possible from its V10 engine. Even without being completely dialed in, however, the run demonstrated the capability of the unusual build.
The Volvoghini Is Another V10 Volvo
The Waffle is not Bjorck’s only Volvo powered by a Lamborghini Gallardo V10. Before building the mid-engine sedan, he created the Volvoghini, a V10-powered Volvo wagon.
The Volvoghini is somewhat tamer than the Waffle, with its V10 mounted at the front. The setup is capable of pulling a caravan, while the wagon retains its patina and gives away its unusual powertrain primarily through its wide tires and the sound of its V10.
Both builds take Volvo’s familiar 240 formula in radically different directions, combining the classic Swedish design with Lamborghini V10 power.
