Jaguar has unveiled the production version of its controversial Type 00 Concept, introducing the all-electric Type 01 sports sedan in Manhattan on Tuesday night in what the British automaker describes as its riskiest product move since its founding in 1933.

With its long hood and windswept roofline, the Type 01 takes a modern approach to Jaguar design while subtly drawing inspiration from iconic models including the E-Type sports car and the original XJ sport sedan.

A Major Gamble for Jaguar

“This is the very essence of what a Jaguar should be,” Managing Director Rawdon Glover said during a media briefing ahead of the unveiling. “It has to have drama. It has to have presence. And the proportions are everything.”

The launch comes as Jaguar again faces a critical period in its history. A factory fire nearly destroyed the company in 1957 before Jaguar returned with the E-Type, which Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari described as “the most beautiful car in the world.”

The Type 01 represents another major turning point. By the time production begins in the coming months, Jaguar’s factories will have been idle for about 18 months as the automaker redirected resources toward the new model instead of continuing to build older vehicles that were producing marginal sales, Glover told Autoblog.

The strategy also moves Jaguar into a significantly higher price segment. The Type 01 is expected to start around $130,000, roughly twice the price of a typical Jaguar in recent years, while future models could move even further up-market.

The “Impossible Panel”

The Type 01 retains clear elements of Jaguar’s design heritage while adopting a long, low profile. Its arched roofline reaches no more than 1.4 meters, or 55.1 inches, in height, creating a major engineering challenge because the passenger compartment sits above a 120-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The vehicle follows the Type 00 concept that debuted in 2024 and received a minor update in mid-2025. The original concept drew attention with unusual colors and an unconventional marketing campaign that generated both significant buzz and criticism.

Jaguar largely retained the concept’s design for the production Type 01, creating particular challenges around the rear of the sports sedan, where multiple curves and angles had to converge.

Engineering software initially indicated that the required all-aluminum body panel could not be produced. Jaguar engineers ultimately found a solution that the company now calls the “Impossible Panel.”

1,000 Horsepower and Three Electric Motors

Jaguar says the Type 01 was developed to combine dramatic styling with strong acceleration and refined but aggressive handling. Three electric motors produce a combined 1,000 horsepower and about 1,007 pound-feet of torque.

The electric sedan uses a rear-biased setup, with two custom-designed motors powering the rear axle and a third motor mounted at the front. Jaguar has not yet released all final performance specifications, including its 0-to-60-mph time.

Glover indicated that Jaguar did not focus solely on making the Type 01 a traditional muscle car built around its 0-to-60-mph figure. Instead, he said the sedan is quickest once it reaches 60 mph.

The Type 01 will offer five driving modes, including “Jaguar Mode,” which Vehicle Engineering Director Matt Becker said provides the best balance between performance and comfort. The car will also emphasize rear-wheel power delivery, reflecting Jaguar’s traditional approach to performance.

Becker described the Type 01 as a technical showpiece featuring active aerodynamic systems throughout the vehicle. Equipment includes a three-stage pop-up rear wing, four-wheel steering and the ability to vary power between the rear motors to help guide the vehicle through corners using torque vectoring.

850-Volt Architecture and Fast Charging

The Type 01 uses an 850-volt electrical architecture designed to support the performance of its electric motors while also improving charging capability, Becker said. Final charging specifications have not yet been released.

The vehicle can accept up to 350 kW from a public DC charger, suggesting a charging time of around a half hour or less from 10% to 80% if the final system performs as expected.

Jaguar has also equipped the Type 01 with two separate charging ports, positioned on the front left and right quarter panels. Owners can use a 240-volt Level 2 charger from either side, although only one port can accommodate a Tesla-style NACS plug for quick charging.

Jaguar engineers are also studying two-way, or Vehicle-to-Load, power capability. The technology could provide electricity to external appliances or accessories and potentially keep a home powered during a blackout. If the feature proves feasible, Jaguar could add it later through an over-the-air software update.

Jaguar Type 01 Range

Jaguar officials expect the Type 01 to deliver up to 400 miles of range from its 140-kWh battery pack. Becker later told Autoblog that figure is based on the global WLTP testing standard.

He said the U.S. EPA range will likely be closer to 350 miles per charge once final certification is completed. Jaguar also says the vehicle can add 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes of charging.

A High-Tech Luxury Interior

Inside, the Type 01 combines traditional luxury with a technology-focused cabin. A large touchscreen runs behind the steering wheel and extends toward the center of the instrument panel, while a second smartphone-sized display sits at the front of the center console for functions including climate control.

The cabin uses relatively few traditional controls, with many key functions operated through the two touchscreens.

The center console extends the full length of the cabin, effectively dividing the passenger compartment into four sections. Each occupant receives a heated, cooled and massaging seat, while Jaguar uses a combination of advanced metals and fabrics throughout the interior.

Production and U.S. Availability

Production of the Type 01 is scheduled to begin around the end of the year. It will be the first in a series of new Jaguar electric vehicles expected to reach U.S. showrooms during the first half of 2027.

California is expected to become the Type 01’s largest market in the United States. Final pricing has not yet been set, but Glover indicated that buyers should expect a range of approximately $120,000 to $130,000.

Unlike previous Jaguar models, the company does not plan to follow the Type 01 with a cheaper, lower-powered version. Instead, Jaguar expects to continue moving further up-market as it builds out its new electric lineup.
