The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD arrives with two new engines, increased towing capacity and upgraded brakes, but those improvements come with higher prices. The new diesel engine carries an especially large premium, potentially making its additional torque harder to justify.
2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD Gets New Engines and Brakes
The centerpiece of the 2027 Silverado HD lineup is the new 8.3-liter Duramax diesel engine, referred to as “Mongoose.” It produces 555 horsepower and 1,230 pound-feet of torque, giving the Silverado HD more torque than any other HD pickup on the market.
The Silverado 2500 HD starts at $49,995, including the $2,795 freight charge. The entry-level truck is a regular-cab, long-bed model equipped with a 6.6-liter gas V8. Its starting price is $1,000 higher than last year’s Silverado HD and is also above the price of a Ford F-250 XL.
The 2027 Ford F-250 XL starts at $48,920, including destination charges, giving Ford a $1,075 price advantage over the Silverado 2500 HD.
Silverado HD Trim Prices Rise
A Silverado HD Custom with a double cab starts at $53,295, while an LT Regular Cab 4×4 starts at $56,695. Both models are $1,000 more expensive than last year.
The LTZ Crew Cab 4×4 starts at $67,695, representing a $1,300 increase. The ZR2 starts at $77,695, up $1,400, while the High Country starts at $78,195 after a $1,500 increase.
Every truck comes standard with GM’s revised 6.6-liter V8. Updates to the gasoline engine increase output by 11 horsepower to 412, while torque rises by eight pound-feet to 482 lb-ft.
New Diesel Engine Adds $11,400
The new diesel engine comes with a significant additional cost. Selecting the diesel raises the price by $11,400, which is $1,410 more than the previous-generation 6.6 Duramax diesel cost last year.
The diesel remains less expensive than Ford’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke option, which produces 500 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet of torque and costs $12,495.
Ram has not announced pricing for the 2027 model year, while its Cummins diesel option cost $12,995 last year.
Chevrolet has also not announced pricing for the heavier 3500 HD. Properly equipped, that truck can tow up to 38,000 pounds, the new maximum towing capacity. Based on the increases elsewhere in the lineup, the expected 2027 MSRP starts at $51,195.
Electronic Steering and Larger Brakes
For 2027, GM has equipped the Silverado HD trucks with a new steering system. Electronic power steering replaces the previous hydraulic system for the first time.
GM describes the new system as more precise, while it should also provide greater consistency, particularly when maneuvering heavy loads at low speeds.
The Silverado HD also receives a new braking system featuring an electronic brake booster and larger 14.6-inch front rotors. The changes are designed to provide more stopping power and more consistent braking in demanding situations.
The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD therefore combines increased power, higher towing capability, revised steering and upgraded braking hardware with higher starting prices across the lineup and a particularly steep premium for its new diesel engine.
