The 2027 Toyota Celica could mark the return of one of Toyota’s best-known sports car nameplates, with reports pointing to a turbocharged engine, all-wheel drive and potentially around 400 horsepower. Although Toyota has yet to confirm the production model’s specifications or final design, prototype sightings and reports of a rally-inspired comeback have fueled expectations for a new performance coupe.
The original Celica debuted in the 1970s as an affordable sports coupe, while the GT-FOUR versions developed a strong rally reputation thanks to turbocharged engines and all-wheel drive. Production of the seventh-generation model ended about 20 years ago, leaving the Celica name absent from Toyota’s lineup.
Interest in its return intensified after a Toyota executive hinted at a comeback during Rally Japan two years ago. Since then, prototype sightings, reports of a potential rally return and speculation about the car’s powertrain have kept the possibility alive.
2027 Toyota Celica Design: What the Prototypes Reveal
Based on prototype sightings, the next Toyota Celica could feature a low-slung, two-door coupe design with sharp LED headlights, a large front grille, substantial air intakes, flared fenders and a prominent rear wing.
A prototype spotted in Portugal is believed to be connected to Toyota’s preparations for next year’s World Rally Championship regulations. However, a direct relationship between that competition vehicle and the road-going Celica has not been confirmed.
The design direction could draw inspiration from the rally-focused GT-FOUR models, potentially giving the revived Celica a distinct identity within Toyota’s sports car lineup. However, the final production design remains unknown.
Images circulating alongside reports of the car are unofficial renderings, not official Toyota designs. They offer an interpretation of what a rally-inspired Celica might look like based on prototype sightings, but the production version could differ considerably.
Toyota Celica Name: GR Celica or Celica Sport?
Toyota has not confirmed the name of its potential new sports coupe. Both “Celica Sport” and “GR Celica” have appeared in reports and speculation, but the automaker has yet to reveal which name, if either, will be used.
The interior is equally uncertain. Toyota has not shown the cabin or disclosed details about its features, leaving questions about the dashboard, equipment and overall interior design unanswered.
The car’s position within Toyota’s lineup also remains unclear. It could occupy a separate space from the rear-wheel-drive GR86, while a hybrid powertrain could put it in competition with the Honda Prelude. If that happens, performance is expected to remain a central part of the Celica’s identity.
Toyota Celica Engine: A New 2.0-Liter Turbo Could Be Coming
The powertrain is one of the most closely watched aspects of the rumored Celica revival. Reports suggest Toyota is considering a new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that could be based on the G20E, a powerplant currently being developed and tested through motorsports.
The GR Yaris M Concept offers a possible indication of Toyota’s performance engineering direction. Unlike the regular GR Yaris, the experimental concept features a mid-engine layout and sends power to all four wheels.
The GR Yaris M Concept has already been competing in Japan’s Super Taikyu Series as Toyota continues refining its hardware. Whether the same engineering approach will influence the next Celica, however, remains unconfirmed.
Some reports suggest the new Celica could produce around 400 horsepower. That figure remains speculative, and Toyota has not confirmed the engine’s output or finalized the production car’s specifications.
Will the New Toyota Celica Be a Hybrid?
Hybrid technology is another possibility under consideration for the next Celica. However, Toyota has not determined whether the coupe will use a conventional hybrid system or a plug-in hybrid setup.
The potential combination of turbocharged power and electrification could shape the car’s performance character, but the available reports do not establish which configuration Toyota will ultimately choose.
Transmission options are also unconfirmed. A six-speed manual and an eight-speed GR-DAT automatic have both been mentioned in reports, but neither has been officially announced for the production model.
Front-Engine or Mid-Engine? The Biggest Celica Question
Beyond the engine and transmission, the next Celica’s layout remains one of the biggest unanswered questions. Toyota could retain a conventional front-engine configuration or adopt a mid-engine arrangement similar to the GR Yaris M Concept.
The distinction matters to the car’s overall engineering direction, but Toyota has not confirmed which approach it will take. The prototype sightings and motorsports activity have provided clues without establishing the final specifications of the road-going coupe.
When Will the New Toyota Celica Arrive?
The current expectation is that Toyota could reveal or launch the next Celica in 2027 or 2028. However, the automaker has not confirmed a debut date, and key details about the car remain unsettled.
The engine, drivetrain, potential hybrid technology, transmission choices and final design are all still uncertain. For now, the prospect of a rally-inspired Toyota Celica revival remains centered on reports and prototype sightings rather than a confirmed production model.
If the reported plans materialize, the Celica could return as a performance-focused coupe drawing on the GT-FOUR’s rally heritage. Until Toyota releases official details, however, its final form and specifications remain unknown.
