Hyundai Motor America is recalling 94,622 Genesis sedans because front power seat motors could overheat and potentially cause a fire. The automaker is aware of two alleged fire incidents in the United States and is advising owners of affected vehicles to park outdoors, away from other vehicles and structures, while a repair solution is developed.

The recall covers 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis models and 2017-2020 Genesis G80 sedans. Owners may notice a burning smell or a seat control switch that stops working if the defect occurs. No related injuries or crashes have been reported.

Which Genesis Models Are Included in the Recall?

According to a recall report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue affects two model groups:

  • Hyundai Genesis, 2015-2016: 54,644 vehicles.
  • Genesis G80, 2017-2020: 39,978 vehicles.

The vehicles are essentially the same cars. The Hyundai Genesis was renamed the Genesis G80 for the 2017 model year, when Genesis became a separate brand from Hyundai in the United States.

Combined, the two groups account for 94,622 vehicles included in the recall.

What Is Causing the Genesis Seat Motor Fire Risk?

The affected sedans have front power seat motors that could overheat if a power seat control switch becomes stuck. If the motor continues operating, it could ignite a fire whether the vehicle is parked or being driven.

The recall report identifies a potential problem with the front seat slider and height adjustment control switch on non-memory power seats. External forces could dislodge or damage the switch, leaving it engaged and causing the seat adjustment motor to run continuously, even after the occupant leaves the vehicle.

Owners may detect the problem through a burning smell or an inoperative seat control switch. Hyundai has reported two fire incidents associated with the issue, but no related crashes or injuries.

What Should Owners of Recalled Genesis Cars Do?

Hyundai has issued a fire risk warning and strongly advises owners of affected Genesis vehicles to park outdoors and away from buildings, other vehicles and other structures wherever possible.

Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed on December 7, 2026. Hyundai is still developing a remedy for the problem.

Once a repair solution becomes available, owners will need to take their vehicles to an authorized Hyundai or Genesis dealer for inspection and repair, if necessary. The work will be performed free of charge.

How to Check Whether Your Genesis Is Affected

Owners can contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 for additional information about the recall. They should reference recall number 308 for Hyundai or 035G for Genesis.

Vehicle owners can also use the NHTSA website to check whether their car is included in the recall by entering its vehicle identification number (VIN).

Hyundai and Genesis Face More Seat-Related Recalls in 2026

The Genesis recall follows several other seat-related defects and safety recalls involving Hyundai vehicles in 2026. The issues are unrelated, but they have included problems involving powered seats and seat belts.

The most serious involved a powered rear seat in the Hyundai Palisade SUV that trapped and killed a young child. A stop-sale order and a recall affecting more than 61,000 Palisade SUVs followed.

In April 2026, nearly 300,000 Hyundai and Genesis vehicles were recalled because of a seat belt defect. The affected vehicles could experience detaching seat belt anchors, potentially increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

A separate recall affected nearly 50,000 Hyundai Kona crossovers because their seat belt buckles could fail.

Despite these recalls, Hyundai maintains a generally strong safety record, with many of its models receiving a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

What Happens Next?

For now, Hyundai is developing a remedy for the 94,622 recalled Genesis sedans, with owner notification letters scheduled for December 7, 2026. Until a repair becomes available, owners of affected vehicles are being urged to follow the automaker’s parking precautions to reduce the potential fire risk.
