The Freelander 8, a technology-focused luxury SUV developed by the Chery Jaguar Land Rover joint venture in China for global markets, has received official powertrain specifications for its Middle East plug-in hybrid version. The SUV combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged hybrid engine, a 34.12-kWh battery and dual-motor all-wheel drive, delivering 617 horsepower, up to 68 miles of electric-only range and a combined driving range of 550 miles.

The Freelander 8 also brings substantial off-road capabilities, advanced driver assistance technology and a technology-packed cabin. It will launch first in the United Arab Emirates, where pricing starts at AED300,000, or around $81,700, before expanding into additional international markets, including the UK and European Union.

Freelander 8 PHEV Delivers 617 Horsepower

The Middle East-spec Freelander 8 uses a different powertrain from the version initially introduced in China. While the Chinese model debuted with an 818-horsepower 1.5-liter extended-range electric powertrain, the Middle East version pairs a 2.0-liter turbocharged hybrid engine with a 34.12-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery and dual-motor all-wheel drive.

The plug-in hybrid system produces a maximum combined output of 460 kilowatts, equivalent to 617 horsepower, and maximum torque of 662 Newton-meters, or 488 pound-feet.

The SUV can travel up to 68 miles (110 kilometers) on electric power alone. With a full fuel tank and a fully charged battery, its combined range reaches 550 miles (886 kilometers).

Charging the battery from 20% to 80% takes 20 minutes or less when using a DC fast-charging station. Despite its substantial size, the Freelander 8 can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in 5.8 seconds.

The SUV measures more than 201 inches in length and weighs 6,570 pounds, making its performance figures a notable part of its overall package.

Advanced Suspension and Off-Road Capability

The Freelander 8 is equipped with an Intelligent All-Terrain System, known as i-ATS, featuring nine driving modes designed for different road and off-road conditions. Available settings include Sand Mode, Smart Mode and Expert Mode.

A dual-chamber air suspension system with continuously controlled damping helps the SUV adapt to changing terrain. The setup provides up to 10.5 inches (266 millimeters) of ground clearance.

The Freelander 8’s stated off-road capabilities include negotiating a 31.5-inch (800-mm) cross-axle test, climbing gradients of up to 70% and wading through water up to 35.4 inches (900 mm) deep.

These features complement the SUV’s dual-motor all-wheel-drive system and selectable terrain modes, giving the Freelander 8 a range of equipment for both on-road driving and more demanding off-road conditions.

Freelander 8 Interior Features a 46.3-Inch Display

In the Middle East, the Freelander 8 will be offered with a three-row, six-seat interior. The second row can be equipped with massage functions, while the third row includes standard ventilation and 32.8 inches of legroom.

The dashboard features a 46.3-inch 8K Mini LED display, accompanied by a separate 15.6-inch central screen. Both displays are powered by a Qualcomm automotive-grade SA8295P chip.

The SUV also comes standard with L2+ driver assistance technology offering more than 30 functions. A valet parking system will be available in select markets.

Called Super Intelligent Valet Parking (SIVP), the system supports automated parking and vehicle summoning in compatible parking environments. Its operation remains subject to system conditions and driver supervision.

Freelander 8 Launches in the UAE for Around $81,700

The United Arab Emirates will be the first international market for the Freelander brand. The Freelander 8 made its debut on September 29 at the brand’s global launch event in Abu Dhabi.

In the UAE, the SUV starts at AED300,000, equivalent to around $81,700 at the current exchange rate. That is substantially higher than the Chinese model’s $50,000 base price.

The price difference reflects several factors outlined for the UAE market. The China-built Freelander 8 is subject to a 5% customs duty and 5% VAT, while the Middle East version also comes fully loaded and uses a different powertrain.

Freelander Plans Expansion Into Europe and Other Markets

Following its UAE launch, the Freelander brand plans to expand into other left-hand-drive markets across the Middle East and North Africa. The next phase will cover right-hand-drive markets, including Australia and New Zealand.

The third phase is expected to bring the brand to the UK and European Union, extending the reach of the China-built SUV beyond its initial international markets.

With 617 horsepower, a claimed combined range of 550 miles, extensive off-road equipment and a technology-focused interior, the Middle East-spec Freelander 8 is positioned as a premium plug-in hybrid SUV. Its international rollout will begin in the UAE before progressing through additional markets toward an eventual launch in the UK and European Union.
