Cadillac has introduced a new entry-level variant of the XT5 in China, expanding the SUV’s lineup with the XT5 Air PHEV. The new model combines a lower starting price with electrified power, modern interior technology and a claimed combined range of 845 miles, while offering fewer advanced driver-assistance features than higher-tier versions. However, the China-specific model is not expected to reach the U.S. market.
Cadillac Expands China’s XT5 Lineup With a New Base Model
Although Cadillac’s U.S. lineup covers most major vehicle segments, the XT5 remains an area where the brand trails other markets. While American buyers are still offered the first-generation model, China has received an all-new generation featuring updated technology and powertrain options.
China also became the first market to receive Cadillac’s first-ever plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), introduced in the form of the XT5. The 2027 XT5 launched in China earlier this year with a broader selection of powertrains, including fully electric and plug-in hybrid options.
Now, Cadillac has added a more affordable entry point to the lineup. According to GM Authority, the new XT5 Air PHEV joins the existing Pro and Pro Max variants, giving Chinese customers another option when choosing the SUV.
What Makes the XT5 Air PHEV Different?
The XT5 Air, Pro and Pro Max share the same overall exterior design and engine options, but several features distinguish the entry-level model from its more expensive counterparts.
One of the main differences involves the driver-assistance technology. While the higher-tier versions offer the Momenta R7 driver-assistance system with LiDAR, the base XT5 Air replaces it with a more conventional camera-and-radar setup.
The Air also features smaller 20-inch rims and a distinctive monochromatic interior with silver accents. Despite its lower position in the lineup, the model retains Cadillac’s latest-generation cabin technology.
Inside, the XT5 Air features the same sweeping 33-inch ultra-high-definition 9K curved display available in the higher-tier variants, preserving one of the lineup’s prominent technology features.
XT5 Air PHEV Powertrain and Range
All three XT5 variants share the same plug-in hybrid powertrain, which combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with an electrified system. The setup produces 362 horsepower and 515 Nm of torque.
Cadillac also describes the XT5’s electronic all-wheel-drive (e-AWD) system as class-leading and cutting-edge.
For the plug-in hybrid models, the claimed combined driving range reaches 845 miles, while the pure-electric range is rated at 133 miles. The vehicles also support DC fast charging, allowing the battery to charge from 30% to 80% in 12 or 15 minutes.
China’s Cadillac XT5 Air PHEV Costs $35,900
The new XT5 Air PHEV is priced at $35,900 (Converted) in China, making it an affordable option among new electrified SUVs.
Despite the model’s competitive pricing and expanded powertrain options, Cadillac is not expected to bring this version of the XT5 to the United States. The vehicle is set to remain exclusive to China, given the strict laws against China-made vehicles.
When Will the U.S. Get a New Cadillac XT5?
Although the XT5 Air PHEV will not reach American dealerships, Cadillac recognizes the need for a new-generation XT5 in the U.S. market. The company plans to introduce an all-new model sometime in late 2027.
For now, Chinese buyers will have access to the newer XT5 generation and its expanded powertrain lineup, while U.S. customers will have to wait for Cadillac’s planned replacement for the current first-generation SUV.
