The BMW iX3 is off to a strong start in the U.S. electric luxury SUV market, outselling several established rivals despite arriving late in the third quarter of 2026. According to a new electric vehicle sales report from Cox Automotive, BMW sold 1,101 iX3 SUVs in the quarter, beating the Porsche Macan EV and Audi Q6 e-tron even though customer deliveries began only in September.
The early results provide an encouraging start for a model that introduces BMW’s Neue Klasse design language and platform, which will influence multiple future vehicles from the German automaker. With additional versions planned, the iX3 is emerging as an important model in BMW’s electric vehicle lineup.
BMW iX3 Records Strong U.S. Sales in Q3 2026
BMW sold 1,101 iX3 SUVs in the United States during the third quarter of 2026. Because deliveries began in September, the electric SUV was available for only part of the quarter, making its initial sales total particularly notable.
The iX3 also outperformed several other electric vehicles in BMW’s lineup. The company sold 720 i5s, 464 i7s and 121 examples of the discontinued iX during the same period. The i4 was the only BMW electric vehicle to outsell the iX3, with 2,539 units sold.
The results also put the iX3 ahead of several competing electric luxury SUVs, including models from Porsche, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
BMW iX3 Outsells Key Electric Luxury SUV Rivals
The BMW iX3 led a group of competing electric luxury SUVs in U.S. third-quarter sales, according to the reported figures. Several rivals with longer-established market presences finished behind BMW’s new electric SUV.
| Electric SUV | Q3 2026 U.S. Sales |
|---|---|
| BMW iX3 | 1,101 |
| Porsche Macan EV | 1,023 |
| Audi Q6 e-tron | 810 |
| Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric | 341 |
| Genesis Electrified GV70 | 163 |
| Volvo EX60 | 137 |
The Porsche Macan EV recorded 1,023 sales, while the Audi Q6 e-tron reached 810. The Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric followed with 341 units, ahead of the Genesis Electrified GV70 at 163 and the Volvo EX60 at 137.
None of these competitors outsold the iX3 during the quarter, despite most having been on sale longer. The iX3’s early performance also puts it within reach of less expensive electric SUVs, including the Lexus RZ, which recorded 2,400 sales in the third quarter.
BMW Plans to Expand the iX3 Lineup in 2027
The iX3’s initial U.S. sales success comes while the SUV is offered in just one configuration: the 50 xDrive. That model produces 463 horsepower and has a claimed range of up to 434 miles on a full charge, although it has exceeded 600 miles in some tests.
BMW plans to introduce the high-performance iX3 M60 next year. The new version will produce 603 horsepower from its dual-motor powertrain and accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds.
The M60 is not expected to match the 50 xDrive’s 434-mile range. However, it will use the same 800-volt technology, enabling ultra-fast charging at rates of up to 400 kW.
The expanded lineup will give BMW another way to build on the iX3’s initial market performance, adding a higher-powered option alongside the existing 50 xDrive.
Neue Klasse Design Sets the iX3 Apart
Both iX3 variants feature BMW’s Neue Klasse design language, characterized by a narrower grille and cleaner exterior lines. Inside, the Panoramic iDrive system takes center stage in a technology-focused cabin, while the materials are described as higher quality than those in the gas-powered iX3.
The model also received significant recognition in 2026, winning the World Car of the Year title. Its role extends beyond a single SUV, as the iX3 introduces the design language and platform that will underpin other electric BMWs, including the i3 sedan.
Why the BMW iX3’s Early Sales Matter
The iX3’s performance in the third quarter offers an early indication of how BMW’s Neue Klasse electric vehicles may fare in the U.S. market. Despite a limited sales window and a single available trim, the SUV outsold several competing luxury electric models, including the Porsche Macan EV and Audi Q6 e-tron.
BMW looks likely to retain its U.S. luxury sales crown in 2026, and the iX3 could become one of the models helping the automaker maintain that position in 2027. Its initial sales, combined with the planned arrival of the high-performance M60, make the electric SUV an important part of BMW’s lineup expansion.
