BMW is reportedly offering some employees more than €650,000, or about $730,000, to leave the company voluntarily as the German automaker works to cut costs and reduce its workforce. The program includes additional bonuses for employees who leave early, flexible severance payment options and select benefits that can extend beyond their final day at work.

The Munich-based automaker is targeting approximately 8,000 job cuts by the end of next year as it seeks to streamline operations and remain competitive in an increasingly challenging market. However, the strong response to its voluntary departure program has reportedly prompted BMW to prioritize processing the expressions of interest it has already received.

BMW Reportedly Offers Severance Packages Exceeding €650,000

According to Handelsblatt, which obtained a confidential sample termination agreement, some BMW employees have been offered six-figure severance payments, with individual cases reportedly exceeding €650,000. At current exchange rates, that amount is approximately $730,000.

BMW declined to comment on specific severance amounts or contractual details. As a result, the highest reported payouts should be understood as individual cases rather than standard offers available to all employees.

The program is part of BMW’s broader effort to reduce spending while reorganizing its workforce. Like other established automakers, the company faces pressure to control costs without compromising its ability to develop the next generation of vehicles.

BMW Offers a ‘Turbo Bonus’ for Early Departures

Eligible employees can choose between two departure dates: March 31, 2027, and October 31, 2027. Those who agree to leave earlier may receive an additional payment known as the “Turbo Bonus,” which is designed to encourage employees to make their decisions sooner.

Participation in the program requires mutual consent. Neither BMW nor an employee can force the other party to agree to a voluntary departure.

The amount offered reportedly varies according to individual circumstances. Age, salary and years of service are likely to play important roles in determining each employee’s package, although the sample agreement does not provide a universal calculation formula.

BMW says it determines the terms of individual offers using consistent principles. However, the actual amounts and conditions can differ from one employee to another.

Employees Have Five Options for Receiving Severance Payments

BMW employees participating in the program can choose from five ways to receive their severance payments, giving them flexibility in how the money is distributed.

  • Lump sum: Receive the severance payment in a single payment.
  • Installments: Receive the money through multiple payments.
  • Retirement savings: Direct contributions to an existing retirement savings account.
  • Direct insurance: Make payments into an existing direct insurance policy.
  • Combination: Split the payment across a combination of the available methods.

The available options allow departing employees to select a payment arrangement that suits their individual circumstances under the terms of the program.

Some Departing BMW Employees Could Keep Vehicle Benefits

Financial compensation is not the only incentive included in BMW’s voluntary departure program. According to the report, certain employees may retain access to selected benefits after leaving the company.

Employees who turn 55 by the program’s conclusion on October 31, 2027, may qualify for selected benefits available to BMW retirees. These include preferential terms when purchasing new or used BMW vehicles.

The agreement also contains provisions covering company cars. Some employees in higher non-tariff pay grades may be permitted to purchase their final company vehicle under the applicable rules.

Employees in certain higher grades could also qualify to purchase a second car during the month they leave BMW.

Strong Employee Interest Overwhelms BMW’s HR Portal

BMW’s voluntary departure program initially encountered a technical problem when employees rushed to access their individual offers. The surge in activity temporarily overwhelmed the company’s internal human resources portal.

The company subsequently confirmed that interest in the program was high and began prioritizing the expressions of interest already submitted.

The response underscores the demand for information about the financial terms of voluntary departure, although it does not establish how many employees will ultimately leave under the program.

BMW Faces the Challenge of Cutting Costs Without Losing Expertise

BMW is offering substantial financial incentives to reduce its workforce as it seeks to simplify its organization and lower costs. The reported severance packages, early-departure bonuses and additional benefits form part of that effort.

The challenge is to achieve those savings while retaining the experience and expertise needed to develop the company’s next generation of vehicles. That future lineup may include a flagship SUV positioned above the X7.

With BMW targeting approximately 8,000 job cuts by the end of next year, the company is relying on voluntary departures to help reshape its workforce while managing the demands of its ongoing vehicle development plans.
