The Volkswagen ID. Aura L5 is a new all-electric midsize sedan designed specifically for the Chinese market, featuring fastback styling, practical liftback cargo access and up to 416 horsepower. Developed through the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture, the model will join the ID. Aura T6 SUV as the second vehicle in Volkswagen’s China-focused ID. Aura electric vehicle lineup ahead of its planned market launch in early 2027.
Volkswagen ID. Aura L5 Targets Chinese Buyers
Volkswagen is increasingly relying on local partners to develop vehicles tailored to Chinese consumers as domestic automakers gain favor over imported brands. China remains Volkswagen’s largest market, but declining sales have pushed the company to strengthen its local product strategy.
This year, Volkswagen has introduced several models developed with Chinese joint venture partners SAIC, FAW and JAC Group, as well as technology partner XPeng. The ID. Aura L5 is the latest addition to that effort.
The first official images of the electric sedan were released on October 16, alongside regulatory filing images from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
A Fastback Design With Practical Liftback Access
Designed by a Sino-German team, the ID. Aura L5 follows Volkswagen’s “flowing sculpture” design language, inspired by the ID. Aura concept unveiled at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show.
Although the vehicle is described as a “smart fastback” and a “super family sedan,” the ID. Aura L5 is technically a liftback. Its power-operated rear liftgate is designed to open beyond 70 degrees, with an opening wider than 39.4 inches (1,000 mm) to make loading bulky items easier.
The sedan retains the concept’s short overhangs and long wheelbase, giving it a coupe-like profile. Other styling features include slim headlights connected by an LED light bar, frameless doors, semi-hidden door handles and a rear ducktail.
Volkswagen ID. Aura L5 Dimensions and Interior Space
The ID. Aura L5 measures 192.2 inches (4,883 mm) long, 74 inches (1,881 mm) wide and 59.3 inches (1,506 mm) tall. Its wheelbase measures 111 inches (2,820 mm).
Its overall dimensions are similar to those of the Volkswagen ID. Era 5S plug-in hybrid sedan and the European-market ID.7, while the new electric sedan is slightly larger than the Volkswagen Jetta sold in the United States.
Despite its low-slung exterior profile, the cabin accounts for 84.4% of the vehicle’s footprint. Buyers will also have six exterior colors to choose from: white, gray, silver, purple, gold and blue.
Up to 416 Horsepower From Rear- or All-Wheel Drive
The ID. Aura L5 is based on the locally developed Compact Main Platform (CMP), which is also used by the Volkswagen ID. Era 5X SUV.
Power comes from an LFP battery pack paired with one of two electric powertrains. The rear-wheel-drive version produces 208 horsepower (155 kW) from a single rear motor, while the all-wheel-drive model uses a dual-motor setup delivering 416 horsepower (310 kW).
The ID. Aura L5 will have a top speed limited to 109 mph (175 km/h).
Lidar Technology and Expected 2027 Launch
Selected ID. Aura L5 trims will feature lidar sensors to support enhanced smart-driving capabilities, with the technology intended to make daily commuting easier and more convenient.
Additional details, including the vehicle’s driving range, have not yet been disclosed. More information is expected in the weeks leading up to the sedan’s official market launch in early 2027.
