The next-generation BMW M3 is taking shape, with a new spy video offering an early listen to the combustion-powered sports sedan’s exhaust note. BMW is preparing an all-electric M3 for the first time, but it will also introduce a new combustion-powered version featuring a six-cylinder engine without a plug-in hybrid system.
The footage captures the prototype during a cold start and includes several drive-by sequences. However, other BMW vehicles accompanying the prototype create substantial tire noise, making it difficult to hear the engine clearly under load.
Next BMW M3 Sounds Similar to the Current Model
The new M3 produces a sound similar to the current model, which uses the S58 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six. Although the exact specifications and engine designation of the next-generation powertrain have not been confirmed, the similarities suggest that the new engine could build on the existing design.
The upcoming M3 is also expected to become the first mild-hybrid version of the performance sedan. To help the engine meet European emissions requirements, BMW is expected to introduce pre-chamber ignition technology known as “M Ignite.”
How M Ignite Ignition Technology Works
Pre-chamber ignition systems use a separate spark plug in a small chamber within the cylinder head. This chamber pre-ignites much of the air-fuel mixture before it enters the main combustion chamber above the piston.
Openings in the pre-chamber allow the partially burned mixture to flow into the main chamber, where a conventional spark plug completes the ignition process. The approach is designed to produce a cleaner, more complete burn while extracting more energy from the air-fuel mixture.
At low and medium engine speeds, the system operates with the conventional spark plug igniting the mixture in the main combustion chamber. As a result, the new engine could sound similar to the current S58 during everyday driving, although increasingly restrictive exhaust noise limits could affect its sound.
At higher engine speeds and loads, pre-chamber ignition becomes the primary source of fuel ignition, maximizing the force generated during combustion. The flames produced during the process can exit the pre-chamber at around the speed of sound.
2028 BMW M3 Expected to Arrive After a 2027 Reveal
Increasingly frequent sightings of M3 development prototypes suggest that development is progressing. However, the current G80 M3 is expected to remain on sale through next year, while the next-generation G84 is planned as a 2028 model.
That timeline means the new M3 is not expected to be unveiled until at least several months into 2027, and potentially later in the year.
The next-generation model is expected to feature styling inspired by the M Vision Neue Klasse concept, although its final power output remains unknown.
BMW Faces Pressure From AMG and Audi Sport
The performance-car market remains competitive as automakers continue to offer increasingly powerful models. Mercedes-AMG and Audi Sport offer more than 600 horsepower in their latest C 63 and RS 5 models, respectively.
The next M3’s power output has not been disclosed, leaving its performance specifications unconfirmed. The upcoming combustion model will join the all-electric M3 as part of the next generation of BMW’s performance lineup.
