General Motors expects its financial performance to improve in 2027 as the automaker focuses on new products, increased production capacity, operational efficiency and tighter cost controls. After a challenging 2026 marked by investments and inflationary pressures, GM is pointing to stronger financial results, healthy product demand and improved cash flow as key factors shaping its outlook.

GM Expects Financial Improvements Heading Into 2027

In a letter to shareholders, Mary Barra, GM’s chair and CEO, said the company is performing well while recognizing the “agility, teamwork, and commitment” of its workforce. She also highlighted GM’s efforts to navigate growing inflationary pressures through strategic investments in new products and services, improved quality and greater operating efficiency.

The company has identified several areas that could support improved financial performance, including healthy demand for its products and easing pressure from commodities, logistics and other business-related costs.

GM has also approved a $20 billion share buyback, demonstrating its continued focus on shareholder returns despite the challenges it has faced.

Third-Quarter Results Show Stronger Financial Performance

GM outlined its financial outlook alongside its third-quarter results, reporting revenue of more than $50 billion and adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of $4.1 billion.

Adjusted diluted earnings per share reached $3.70, an increase of 32% year over year. Adjusted automotive free cash flow totaled $5.9 billion, marking the highest quarterly figure in four years.

GM also raised its adjusted EBIT outlook from $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion. Its automotive free cash flow outlook increased from $11.5 billion to $12.5 billion.

These figures provide a financial foundation for the company’s expectations as it prepares for the 2027 model year and continues working to improve operating efficiency.

New GM Vehicles Expected for the 2027 Model Year

GM’s upcoming vehicle lineup is another important part of its plans for 2027. The company is expected to introduce new full-size pickup trucks, including an updated Chevrolet Silverado featuring a revised V8 engine, alongside other anticipated models.

The planned launches will be accompanied by efforts to increase production capacity across full-size vehicles and high-volume crossovers. GM has renewed its investments in manufacturing facilities as it works to support production of these vehicles.

Production Increases Planned for SUVs and Crossovers

GM plans to increase production of several full-size vehicles, including the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon.

The company also expects higher production of the Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Blazer and Cadillac XT5 at their respective plants. In addition, a new Buick crossover is expected to begin rolling off the production line at GM’s Fairfax facility soon.

Expanding production capacity across these vehicles is part of GM’s broader effort to strengthen its lineup and improve manufacturing efficiency as it moves toward 2027.

OnStar, Super Cruise and GM Defense Remain Priorities

Beyond vehicle manufacturing, GM plans to continue growing its adjacent business units, including OnStar, Super Cruise and GM Defense. The company expects these operations to contribute to its overall financial performance into next year.

Cost management will also remain a priority. GM plans to focus on expenses related to warranty claims, electric vehicles, commodities and onshoring as it works to improve its financial position.

The automaker is also expected to scale back its electric vehicle investment plans into 2027, reflecting its broader emphasis on managing spending and improving financial efficiency.

GM’s 2027 Outlook Depends on Execution

GM’s outlook points to a strategy built around disciplined spending, more efficient vehicle production, expanded manufacturing capacity and a broad product lineup. Healthy demand, improved cash flow and growth in adjacent business units could also support the company’s financial performance.

Although GM has not promised profitability, its plans for new vehicles, production improvements and tighter cost controls outline how the automaker intends to strengthen its financial position through the end of 2027.
