General Motors plans to introduce new hybrid vehicles as early as 2027, signaling a shift in its powertrain strategy as its electric vehicle lineup faces challenges. CEO Mary Barra outlined the company’s plans during its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, saying GM intends to add hybrids across several key segments where it already competes.

GM’s overall sales performance has remained relatively steady in a difficult automotive market, but its internal combustion engine models have performed better than its broader portfolio, which has been weighed down by its extensive electric vehicle lineup. The company is now preparing to expand its hybrid offerings rather than rely as heavily on its current EV strategy.

GM Targets Hybrid Vehicles Starting in 2027

Barra said GM expects to begin introducing new hybrid vehicles as early as 2027. She also indicated that the company plans to bring hybrid powertrains into multiple important market segments.

Most hybrid sales currently come from compact cars, midsize cars and minivans, according to Barra. GM does not currently offer hybrid vehicles in those segments, but its broader plan focuses on categories where the automaker already sells vehicles.

Rather than developing entirely new models, GM intends to introduce hybrid versions of existing nameplates. This approach could help the company expand its hybrid lineup without the expense of creating and producing a separate range of vehicles.

Which GM Models Could Get Hybrid Powertrains?

Although Barra did not provide a detailed breakdown of the company’s plans, existing models such as the Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado and Chevrolet Trailblazer could be candidates for hybrid versions.

These vehicles compete in important segments of the U.S. market. However, adding hybrid production would require GM to retool manufacturing facilities to accommodate the new powertrains.

GM is also working on a hybrid or plug-in hybrid version of its next-generation Silverado and Sierra pickups. Both trucks received major updates for the 2027 model year, leaving open the possibility of additional powertrain options.

Could the Chevrolet Equinox Get a Hybrid Version?

The Chevrolet Equinox is scheduled to enter production at GM’s Fairfax assembly plant in Kansas beginning in 2027. The automaker has not confirmed whether the plant’s expansion will include production of a hybrid Equinox.

However, the planned facility changes and GM’s broader hybrid strategy leave that possibility open. The company has not announced specific hybrid configurations, launch dates for individual models or detailed production plans.

GM Adjusts Its Strategy as Hybrid Demand Gains Attention

The repeal of the EV tax rebate and rising fuel prices have added to the market pressures shaping automakers’ powertrain decisions. Hybrid vehicles have become an increasingly important focus, and GM’s planned expansion would give customers more options across the company’s existing lineup.

By targeting familiar models and key vehicle segments, GM aims to introduce more hybrids without building an entirely new set of nameplates. Its first new hybrid vehicles could arrive as early as 2027, although the company has yet to confirm the specific models that will lead the rollout.
