Stellantis is expanding warranty coverage for certain 2018 through 2024 Dodge Durango models following years of owner complaints about failing rear LED taillights. The extension covers the SUV’s distinctive LED racetrack taillamp assembly for five years with unlimited mileage from the vehicle’s initial in-service date, giving eligible owners access to free repairs for the lighting defect.
For owners whose vehicles have already passed the five-year coverage period, Dodge is offering a six-month grace period beginning on the date of the customer notification letter. Owners whose taillights are functioning properly do not need to take immediate action, while those experiencing the problem can visit a local dealer for a free repair.
What the Dodge Durango Warranty Extension Covers
The expanded warranty addresses problems with the rear LED racetrack taillamp assembly, which can burn out or illuminate only partially. The issue has generated years of complaints from Durango owners and was highlighted in a class action lawsuit that previously left some customers facing repair bills of up to $2,000.
Although the warranty extension is not a formal federal safety recall, it provides a repair option for owners affected by the lighting failure. Dodge is also offering reimbursement to customers who have already paid to fix the problem.
Owners can submit reimbursement claims online or mail the physical claim form included with their notification letter. The program is intended to refund previous expenses associated with the defect.
Other Dodge Durango Reliability Problems
The taillight issue adds to a series of quality control problems involving the Durango. The automaker recently attempted to address rear liftgate spoilers that were detaching from vehicles on highways, but the initial repair failed to resolve the problem, prompting another recall.
The SUV’s high-performance models have also faced legal challenges. A group of owners sued over declining resale values after the limited-edition SRT Hellcat trim unexpectedly returned for a second production run.
Commercial and fleet operators have encountered additional reliability concerns. The Indiana State Police are dealing with an almost 20 percent failure rate across their new fleet of Durango Pursuit vehicles because of oil cooler leaks. The problems have resulted in millions of dollars in taxpayer losses and extensive vehicle downtime.
Dodge Durango Sales Rebound in 2026
The warranty extension comes as the Durango experiences a resurgence in sales. Retail sales increased 18 percent in the third quarter of 2026, marking the SUV’s best third-quarter performance since 2005. The increase follows 37% growth in 2025.
Addressing the rear LED racetrack taillight defect gives owners a new option for resolving a longstanding problem with one of the SUV’s signature design features. The expanded coverage also provides a reimbursement path for customers who have already paid for repairs.
With Durango sales gaining momentum, resolving these outstanding quality concerns remains an important step as the automaker works to address owner complaints and maintain the SUV’s recent sales performance.
