The Porsche Macan could be in line for a major powertrain surprise, with reports suggesting the next-generation combustion-powered compact luxury crossover may feature a V8 engine. Spy footage from the Nürburgring reportedly captures a test vehicle producing a sound unlike a conventional V6, raising the possibility that Porsche is considering a more powerful setup for its upcoming model.

How the Porsche Macan Became a Sales Success

Porsche faced serious financial challenges in the early 1990s as a late-1980s recession, declining sales and internal mismanagement pushed the company toward the brink of bankruptcy. The automaker responded with an overhaul that included assistance from Toyota to improve its management practices. Although those changes helped, Porsche still needed new products to restore its financial strength.

The Boxster helped bring more customers into Porsche showrooms, but the launch of the Cayenne in 2002 marked a major turning point. As Porsche’s first SUV, the Cayenne initially drew criticism from some devoted enthusiasts, yet it became a significant source of revenue and the company’s fastest-selling model.

That distinction eventually passed to the Macan, which arrived in 2014 and quickly overtook its larger sibling. The compact crossover reached one million vehicles in just 12 years, compared with 18 years for the Cayenne. The 911, a more specialized model, took more than half a century to reach the same milestone.

The Next Porsche Macan Could Get a Gas Engine

The first-generation Macan remained in production for an extended period, with the final vehicles rolling off the assembly line this year. Its second generation is currently available exclusively with electric power, and sales have experienced a noticeable decline.

Porsche is nevertheless expected to introduce a combustion-powered successor to the Macan. The upcoming model could potentially carry the Octan name, although that name has not been confirmed and the vehicle’s arrival is still some time away.

The future gasoline-powered crossover is expected to share much of its underlying architecture with the Audi Q5. Porsche’s test vehicles have already appeared wearing Q5 bodywork, indicating the extent of the relationship between the two models. Despite the shared components, the new Porsche is expected to retain the driving characteristics associated with the brand.

New Report Suggests a V8 Engine Could Be Under Consideration

Recent reports have raised the possibility that the compact luxury crossover could be offered with a V8 engine. Observers at the Nürburgring reportedly noticed that a test vehicle did not sound like a V6-powered car.

Spy footage appears to support that possibility, with the vehicle producing a deep engine note at low speeds and a distinctive sound under full throttle. While the audio has fueled speculation about the powertrain, the engine configuration has not been officially confirmed.

There are two potential explanations for the test vehicle’s sound. Porsche could be preparing to install a V8 in its compact crossover, or the vehicle could be serving as a test bed for V8 applications in smaller models built around Audi’s Premium Platform Combustion architecture, which will also underpin additional Porsche vehicles.

What V8 Engine Could Power the Porsche Macan Successor?

If Porsche moves forward with a V8-powered version, the likely candidate is the automaker’s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, which is already used in the Cayenne and Panamera.

The engine’s output could differ depending on how Porsche adapts it to the smaller crossover. The company could increase its power or detune it to suit the vehicle’s size and positioning.

As a reference point, the current Cayenne S produces 468 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. A more ambitious possibility would be output of 591 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, matching the all-new Audi SQ7.

Neither output figure has been confirmed for the upcoming Porsche crossover. The potential specifications remain uncertain until the automaker provides more details about the vehicle and its powertrain.

When Will the New Porsche Crossover Debut?

The next-generation combustion-powered Porsche compact crossover is expected to premiere in the first half of 2027. Until then, questions remain about its final name, engine lineup and performance figures.

If the reported V8 configuration becomes reality, it would represent a notable development for Porsche’s compact crossover lineup. For now, the Nürburgring test vehicle’s unusual engine sound offers a potential clue, but confirmation of the production model’s powertrain will have to wait.
