Volkswagen is considering using software architecture developed for China across roughly three-quarters of next-generation electric vehicles from Volkswagen, Skoda and Cupra, a move that could significantly reduce development costs. The proposal, attributed to VW core brand chief Thomas Schäfer, remains under consideration, and Volkswagen has declined to comment.

Volkswagen’s China Software Plan Could Save Billions

The proposed system, known as China Electronic Architecture, serves as the electronic backbone of a vehicle’s software, including its ability to receive over-the-air updates. Its primary appeal is cost, with estimated savings of approximately $4.5 billion to $5.5 billion in the most important vehicle segment.

Development work in China costs about one-quarter as much as it does at the Rivian joint venture in Palo Alto. Applying the architecture could also reduce development costs for the next electric Volkswagen Tiguan by roughly $9,000.

However, it remains unclear whether those savings would translate into lower prices for buyers. Volkswagen has been working to maintain its position against lower-priced Chinese competitors, making development-cost reductions a key motivation behind the proposal.

How Volkswagen Developed Its China Electronic Architecture

Volkswagen and Xpeng began working together in 2023, when Volkswagen invested $700 million in the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer. The electronic architecture was initially developed for the Chinese market and is already being used in production vehicles in China.

Volkswagen holds the system’s intellectual property rights, meaning the architecture is not simply an off-the-shelf product purchased from an outside supplier.

The proposed plan would expand the system’s use beyond China, potentially replacing separate technology Volkswagen has been developing with Rivian for Western markets.

What the Plan Could Mean for Volkswagen and Rivian

Volkswagen’s partnership with Rivian is valued at $5.8 billion and plays a central role in CEO Oliver Blume’s software strategy. A reduced reliance on the joint venture could raise questions about how development costs are shared between the companies.

Some Rivian supporters are concerned that broader use of the China-developed architecture could affect the partnership’s cost-sharing arrangements. Meanwhile, some Volkswagen insiders question whether adapting the system to European regulations would be straightforward or inexpensive.

Questions involving data protection and security remain unaddressed, leaving those issues unresolved as Volkswagen considers expanding the use of its China Electronic Architecture.

The First Rivian-Based Volkswagen EV Is Expected in 2027

The first vehicle expected to use software developed through the Rivian partnership is an entry-level electric hatchback scheduled for 2027. The model is based on the ID. Every1.

Whether the hatchback retains Rivian-based software could provide an early indication of how Volkswagen intends to balance its existing technology partnership with its plans to expand the use of China Electronic Architecture.

Volkswagen is not the only German automaker looking to China for solutions to domestic challenges. Porsche has also been relying on China to address problems at home, highlighting the market’s role in the companies’ technology strategies.
