Shaquille O’Neal once spent $1.3 million on three Rolls-Royce Phantoms after a luxury car salesman questioned whether he could afford them. The former Los Angeles Lakers superstar made the impulsive purchase to prove a point, but the expensive vehicles ultimately became a financial regret because they were too small for his massive frame.

Shaq Bought Three Rolls-Royces After a Dealership Insult

During his prime with the Los Angeles Lakers, O’Neal was passing time at a luxury car dealership with Mike Tyson when he began asking about vehicle prices. Dressed casually in sweatpants and flip-flops, the basketball icon encountered a salesman who underestimated his purchasing power.

The employee reportedly addressed O’Neal as “sonny boy” and questioned whether the towering athlete could afford the luxury cars. Rather than continue dealing with the salesman, O’Neal went directly to the manager and purchased three V12-powered Rolls-Royce Phantoms on the spot.

The $1.3 million transaction turned an ordinary showroom visit into an expensive act of retaliation against the employee who had disrespected him.

Why Shaq Could Barely Drive His Rolls-Royce Phantoms

Before taking delivery of the three luxury sedans, O’Neal made one specific demand: The dealership had to move the driver’s seats as far back as physically possible.

Because standard luxury vehicles often cannot accommodate his enormous frame, O’Neal has frequently relied on extensive automotive modifications. He previously had a Corvette stretched to create enough room behind the steering wheel.

Even after the Rolls-Royce seats were pushed against the rear cabin wall, the Phantoms still did not provide enough headroom or legroom. The expensive cars consequently spent most of their time in his garage rather than on the road.

O’Neal later described the spite-driven purchase as one of the dumbest financial decisions of his life. The salesman he had intended to punish also ended up receiving a substantial commission from the three-car sale.

Shaq’s Eccentric Car Collection Continues to Grow

Despite the Rolls-Royce purchase becoming a costly mistake, O’Neal’s automotive collection remains known for its unusual and highly customized vehicles.

He eventually sold all three Phantoms, giving one to his teammate LeBron James. Another vehicle from the original purchase is currently listed for auction.

O’Neal has continued investing in unconventional automotive projects, including a customized Impala jet boat and an unusual electric salvage coupe that attracted attention across the automotive industry.

Shaq Also Uses Cars to Honor His Late Teammate

Not all of O’Neal’s automotive projects have been driven by extravagance or personal disputes. He recently made headlines for carefully restoring Kobe Bryant’s Cruiser as a tribute to his legendary late teammate.

Although O’Neal has moved beyond buying British luxury sedans out of spite, his collection of unusual vehicles and ambitious custom projects continues to reflect his distinctive influence on car culture.
