The Lexus GX 550 has received an extreme off-road transformation, featuring 40-inch tires, portal axles, upgraded suspension components and specialized equipment designed to tackle demanding terrain. Known as the MTN 550 Recon, the heavily modified SUV combines serious off-road hardware with distinctive interior features and advanced camera technology.
While the Toyota Land Cruiser and 4Runner remain popular choices among off-road enthusiasts, the Lexus GX is attracting increasing attention. Its appeal comes partly from its close relationship with the Land Cruiser Prado, while the current generation also offers a more powerful engine than its Toyota counterpart.
Lexus GX 550 Gets 40-Inch Tires and Portal Axles
The MTN 550 Recon stands out with its subdued matte black finish, enormous ground clearance and oversized wheels and tires. It rides on forged beadlock wheels wrapped in 40-inch tires, which are larger than those available on any factory Wrangler or Raptor.
Accommodating the massive tires required extensive suspension and drivetrain modifications. Several suspension components have been replaced with 74Weld billet aluminum parts, while portal axles from the same company have been installed on both the front independent axles and the solid rear axle.
The SUV also features an aftermarket front locking differential to improve its off-road capabilities. A front-mounted winch provides additional recovery equipment for obstacles the vehicle cannot overcome.
Heavy-Duty Protection and Advanced Lighting Systems
The exterior modifications include custom steel front and rear bumpers, steel fender flares and rock sliders. Full-length skid plates with heavy-duty plastic liners provide additional underbody protection while helping the SUV slide across difficult obstacles.
Other details include dual stainless steel snorkels that sit closely against the body and an exhaust tip cut flush with the rear steel bumper.
The MTN 550 Recon also carries numerous auxiliary lights and cameras mounted on its roof rack and bumpers. These components are attached to actuators that can be operated from inside the cabin.
Some of the cameras feature thermal night vision technology, providing additional visibility in completely dark conditions.
Inside the Lexus GX 550 MTN 550 Recon
The cabin takes a much bolder approach than the SUV’s relatively restrained exterior. Black and red leather and Alcantara cover the interior, while a starlight headliner adds another distinctive feature above the seats.
One of the most unusual additions is the control panel for the exterior lights and cameras, integrated directly into the driver’s sun visor.
Lowering the visor reveals a large screen, a panel of buttons and two small toggle switches. The arrangement gives the interior the appearance of a movie spy car.
The cabin also includes a biometric locking safe, while the doors have received additional ballistic armor.
Stock Twin-Turbo V6 Engine Remains Unchanged
Despite the extensive modifications, the MTN 550 Recon appears to retain the standard twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine.
The powerplant produces 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Although the engine delivers substantial output, the enormous wheels and tires could benefit from additional power.
The engine remains one of the few major components that has not been significantly modified as part of the transformation.
Novel Takes the Lexus GX in a Different Direction
While the MTN 550 Recon focuses on extreme off-road performance, another approach to modifying the Lexus GX comes from Japanese tuning company Novel.
The company offers body kits, brake components, exhaust systems and suspension parts for Lexus models such as the LC 500, RCF and latest GX SUV.
Novel does not currently offer performance upgrades for the GX, but its body kit provides a street-focused alternative to the SUV’s rugged appearance.
Priced at 461,000 yen, or $2,909 USD at today’s exchange rate, the package includes custom fenders with or without vents, along with front and rear bumper extensions.
The bumper extensions alone lower the vehicle’s ride height without modifying its suspension, creating a more aggressive street appearance.
All components are made from fiberglass and must be painted to match the GX’s exterior color.
Two Different Ways to Modify the Lexus GX
The MTN 550 Recon showcases an extensive off-road transformation built around 40-inch tires, portal axles, upgraded suspension and specialized lighting and camera systems. Meanwhile, Novel offers a street-oriented alternative through fiberglass body components designed to change the GX’s appearance without modifying its suspension or adding performance upgrades.
