Ford is expanding its BlueCruise 1.4 hands-free highway driving system to hundreds of thousands of eligible 2024 F-150 trucks, marking the largest software update the company has deployed on a single model year. The rollout builds on BlueCruise’s growing adoption as Ford continues enhancing its driving technology with new AI capabilities designed to make everyday driving more intuitive.
Ford Expands BlueCruise 1.4 to Eligible 2024 F-150 Trucks
BlueCruise is Ford’s advanced hands-free highway driving system, allowing drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel on pre-mapped, divided highways while an infrared camera monitors to ensure their eyes remain on the road.
The automaker said the 2025 F-150 was equipped with BlueCruise 1.4 from the factory. Ford is now rolling out the same version to hundreds of thousands of eligible 2024 F-150 owners, upgrading vehicles directly from version 1.2 to version 1.4.
Ford describes the update as its largest software deployment ever for a single model year as it continues to expand the capabilities of its hands-free driving technology.
Complex Software Rollout Across Multiple Vehicle Lines
Deploying BlueCruise 1.4 requires more than a standard software update. Ford said BlueCruise is available across nine Ford and Lincoln vehicle lines, including gasoline-powered, hybrid, and fully electric models.
Because each vehicle line and model year requires a dedicated software package, the rollout involves updates across multiple vehicle system modules and in-vehicle displays to ensure the system operates seamlessly.
BlueCruise Usage Continues to Grow
Ford said F-Series trucks have remained America’s best-selling truck for nearly half a century, and the company is continuing to prioritize the BlueCruise experience.
According to Ford, F-150 drivers recorded 118 million hands-free highway miles in 2025 while spending 1.6 million hours driving with BlueCruise engaged. The company said those figures represent a 101% year-over-year increase.
Ford also said it uses data shared from millions of hands-free driving miles through a Continuous Learning Loop to continually refine BlueCruise software and improve future updates.
Driver Attention Remains Essential
The article notes that while BlueCruise 1.4 can provide greater comfort during long highway drives, increased reliance on automated driving systems has prompted concerns about driver complacency. It also states that statistical evidence suggests heavy dependence on these technologies may influence driver habits and reduce attentiveness during critical situations.
The article further notes that the broader BlueCruise ecosystem is currently the subject of fatal crash investigations examining the limits of partial driving automation.
As Ford continues expanding BlueCruise 1.4 across eligible F-150 trucks, the update represents a significant step forward in hands-free driving capability while reinforcing that the driver’s full attention remains an essential part of vehicle safety.
