Nissan has revealed that the colors of its brake calipers are more than a styling choice. The automaker says the different finishes have long been used to distinguish performance levels across select Z, GT-R, and NISMO models, giving enthusiasts and everyday drivers a visual indication of each vehicle’s braking capability.
Nissan Uses Brake Caliper Colors to Identify Performance
Performance automakers often separate their models through badges, paint schemes, or special liveries. Nissan has taken a more understated approach by using brake caliper colors to signal different levels of performance.
According to the company, the practice began with the GT-R lineup, where colored brake calipers were first introduced as a visual performance identifier. Today, Nissan offers silver, red, and bright red brake calipers on various Z models, while the Armada NISMO features red calipers. More recently, yellow and gold calipers have also appeared on select Z models and the final GT-R models.
What Each Brake Caliper Color Represents
Nissan says silver brake calipers are the most common across its lineup. They identify braking systems optimized for daily driving and are not specifically associated with high-performance models.
Red brake calipers indicate a higher-performance vehicle, including the 2027 Nissan Z Performance grade. On that model, the red calipers are part of an upgraded Akebono braking system featuring four-piston aluminum front calipers and two-piston aluminum rear calipers, compared with the cast-iron calipers used on Sport variants.
Gold Calipers Became a GT-R Signature
Nissan’s use of gold brake calipers dates back to 1999, when the R34 GT-R introduced gold Brembo calipers. The color quickly became a signature feature for the company’s performance models.
Gold Brembo calipers later appeared on the Nissan 350Z and on the R35 GT-R, which launched in 2007.
Yellow Calipers Mark the Highest-Performance Systems
According to Nissan, yellow brake calipers identify its rarest and highest-performing braking systems. These carbon-ceramic brakes were engineered to provide strong fade resistance during repeated, demanding track laps while delivering improved stopping power.
The yellow calipers were most recently fitted to the outgoing Nissan GT-R NISMO and GT-R Track Edition.
Notable Exceptions Over the Years
Nissan has also made several exceptions to its traditional color strategy. In 2020, the GT-R50 by Italdesign featured red Brembo brake calipers instead of the brand’s customary gold finish.
More recently, the 2023 Z Proto Spec received yellow Akebono brake calipers, although Nissan noted they were not as high-performing as the yellow braking systems fitted to the GT-R NISMO and Track Edition.
Nissan’s brake caliper color system continues to serve as a visual indicator of braking performance, with each color representing a specific level of capability across the company’s performance-focused vehicles.
