The Toyota GR GT RS appears to be taking shape after new spy photos captured at Germany’s Nürburgring revealed what looks to be a more track-focused version of the upcoming GR GT supercar. The heavily camouflaged prototype features a series of aerodynamic upgrades that point to a road-legal model designed with high-performance driving in mind.
Toyota Develops a More Aggressive GR GT
Images taken by Autoblog spy photographers confirm that Toyota is testing a more hardcore version of the GR GT. The prototype closely resembles the GR GT3 race car that will compete in motorsport, while remaining a road-going model.
The more aggressive variant is expected to compete with performance-focused rivals such as the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Earlier this month, Toyota indicated that the standard GR GT would not feature active aerodynamic components or adaptive suspension, suggesting that these technologies could be reserved for this higher-performance version.
GR GT RS Design Focuses on Aerodynamics
The new model could carry the GR GT RS name, although Toyota has not confirmed its official designation. Regardless of the final name, the prototype clearly emphasizes track performance while remaining street legal.
At the front, the vehicle features a larger front splitter designed to generate additional downforce over the front axle. The rear is equipped with a top-mounted swan-neck wing that balances aerodynamic load and could incorporate a DRS-style low-drag function similar to the Porsche 911 GT3 RS.
The prototype also includes aggressive louvered vents on the front fenders to reduce turbulence inside the wheel wells and minimize front-end lift. Additional dive planes on the front bumper further enhance downforce.
At the rear, no major body changes are immediately visible. However, the integrated ducktail spoiler found on the standard GR GT has been covered with camouflage on the test vehicle, possibly indicating that it has been integrated into the trunk design.
Toyota is also expected to make interior changes, although it remains unclear whether this version will be offered as a standalone model, similar to the GT3 RS, or as an optional performance package comparable to a Manthey kit for the GT3.
Power Figures Could Increase Before Production
When Toyota officially unveiled the GR GT in December of last year, the company said its twin-turbocharged dry-sump V8 engine and electric motor would produce a preliminary 641 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque.
Power is sent to an eight-speed transaxle mounted at the rear, while the supercar is expected to reach a top speed of more than 199 mph.
Toyota also noted that the published horsepower, torque, top speed, and vehicle weight figures were preliminary and could improve before the production model arrives sometime next year.
Toyota Faces Strong Competition in the Segment
The appearance of a more extreme prototype suggests the standard GR GT may retain its preliminary 641-horsepower output, while the higher-performance version could receive additional power.
The GR GT will enter a competitive performance segment as Porsche continues development of its next-generation 911 GT3 RS, which may adopt turbocharging for the first time, while Mercedes-AMG is also developing a Black Series version of its GT coupe.
Official Reveal Draws Closer
Although Toyota has not confirmed final specifications or the official name of the more aggressive GR GT variant, Nürburgring testing indicates development is progressing. More details are expected to emerge as testing continues ahead of the production model’s planned arrival next year.
