Mercedes-Benz is emphasizing the sustainability efforts behind its all-new electric C-Class, detailing how the vehicle incorporates more recycled materials and lower-carbon production methods as part of the company’s broader environmental initiatives beyond electric powertrains.
While carbon neutrality has become a major focus for automakers in recent years, Mercedes-Benz says reducing environmental impact also involves how vehicles are designed, sourced, and manufactured.
Electric C-Class Uses More Recycled Materials
According to Mercedes-Benz, the all-new electric C-Class contains approximately 108 pounds of thermoplastic recycled plastic in the form of secondary materials.
Recycled plastics are used in components including the frunk tub, wheelarch liners, jacking points, and bumper carriers. The company also said some seat fabrics and cabin yarn are made from recycled materials.
Mercedes-Benz stated that the electric C-Class contains four times more secondary thermoplastic materials than its combustion-powered C-Class models.
The vehicle also incorporates recycled aluminum. While the automaker did not specify which components use it, the material is included alongside what the company describes as CO2-reduced aluminum, referring to the way those parts are produced as well as their recycled content.
Production Focuses on Lower Carbon Emissions
Mercedes-Benz said renewable energy is used in the production of CO2-reduced aluminum and steel components to help lower emissions during manufacturing.
The company said two-thirds of the electric C-Class uses carbon-reduced aluminum, including the body, steering knuckles, wheels, and battery tray.
Assembly Plant Uses Renewable Energy
The battery-powered C-Class is assembled at the Kecskemet plant, where Mercedes-Benz said renewable and sustainable energy is used to reduce environmental impact.
Solar energy supplies a significant portion of the facility’s power, reducing its dependence on the country’s electrical grid. The automaker also said its paint booths use less water to reduce waste and support water conservation.
Broader Sustainability Initiatives
Beyond manufacturing, Mercedes-Benz said it is placing greater emphasis on responsible sourcing throughout its supply chain.
The company said its efforts include evaluating how suppliers source materials, operate their businesses, and treat their employees. Mercedes-Benz also stated that it is pursuing additional ways to reduce carbon emissions in material sourcing and further decarbonize its supply chains.
The sustainability measures outlined for the all-new electric C-Class reflect Mercedes-Benz’s continued focus on reducing environmental impact through the use of recycled materials, lower-carbon production processes, renewable energy, and responsible sourcing practices.
