The next-generation Mazda MX-5 is being developed with the ability to adapt to a future without a combustion engine, according to Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro. While the iconic roadster is expected to retain gasoline power for now, the company is preparing its successor for changing regulations while working to preserve the lightweight character that defines the MX-5.
Next-Generation Mazda MX-5 Faces New Challenges
Developing a new Mazda MX-5 has become significantly more complex than when the original model debuted in 1989. Unlike its predecessor, the next-generation roadster must meet a growing number of regulatory requirements while remaining true to the lightweight driving experience valued by its loyal fanbase.
As a volume automaker, Mazda cannot simply recreate the formula it used nearly four decades ago. At the same time, regulations are placing increasing pressure on combustion-powered vehicles, creating the possibility that the MX-5 could eventually transition to electric power.
Mazda CEO Confirms the MX-5 Must Be EV-Ready
Speaking to German publication Auto Motor und Sport, Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro confirmed that the MX-5 will eventually make the switch to battery power, although he emphasized that the change is not imminent.
Translated from German, Moro said, “The successor must also be ready for a scenario without a combustion engine. The challenge for us is to make the basic structure lighter without using exotic materials like carbon fiber.”
His comments indicate that the future MX-5 is expected to be capable of accommodating an electric powertrain if circumstances require it. The vehicle may not use a dedicated EV platform, as regulations could change over time.
Combustion Engine Remains Part of the Plan
Moro’s remarks do not mean the next-generation MX-5 will be exclusively electric. Mazda Technical Director Ryuichi Umeshita has confirmed that the upcoming “NE” model will use the new 2.5-liter SkyActiv-Z engine.
It has not yet been confirmed whether that powertrain will be a traditional combustion setup or include some level of hybridization.
Keeping the MX-5 Lightweight Remains a Priority
Even with future electrification under consideration, reducing weight remains one of Mazda’s primary objectives. The automaker is targeting a curb weight below 2,700 pounds, with Moro expressing confidence that the goal can be achieved without relying on exotic materials.
For comparison, the MG Cyberster, currently the world’s only two-seat electric roadster, has a curb weight of 4,079 pounds. That highlights the challenge Mazda faces if it ultimately introduces an electric MX-5 while maintaining the model’s lightweight philosophy.
Launch Timeline
The redesigned Mazda MX-5 is not expected to arrive before 2028, which the report describes as the optimistic timeline. Given the regulatory challenges surrounding development, the current ND MX-5 could remain in production into the 2030s.
For now, Mazda continues developing the next-generation MX-5 with combustion power still in the plan while ensuring the platform is prepared for a future in which an electric powertrain may become necessary.
