The Chevrolet Equinox EV could receive a complete redesign for the 2029 model year, according to a new report, with General Motors reportedly preparing an all-new electric vehicle platform instead of a traditional mid-cycle update. The reported changes are aimed at improving efficiency, packaging, and production costs while keeping the affordable electric SUV competitive.
If the report proves accurate, the next-generation Equinox EV could arrive less than two years from now as GM continues investing in its electric vehicle lineup.
All-New Platform Reportedly in Development
According to a report from Motor1, Chevrolet is already developing a completely new Equinox EV rather than the mid-cycle refresh typically expected around this stage of the model’s life.
The current Equinox EV is built on GM’s BEV3 architecture, which is also shared with the Chevrolet Blazer EV, several Cadillac electric vehicles, and multiple Honda EVs.
The report says the next-generation model will move to a new platform known internally as BEV-N. The architecture is described as a new approach to designing, engineering, and building GM’s affordable electric vehicles, with the goal of reducing costs while improving vehicle packaging.
GM has not released additional details about the reported platform.
BEV3 Has Supported a Wide Range of EVs
The current BEV3 platform has been used across a broad range of vehicles, from compact electric models priced around $35,000 to the Cadillac Celestiq. It has also supported front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive configurations.
According to the report, it remains unclear whether the upcoming BEV-N architecture will offer the same level of flexibility. However, it is expected to serve GM operations in both the United States and China.
The report also states that Honda and Acura are not expected to use the new platform.
Equinox EV Remains GM’s Best-Selling Electric Vehicle
Although it receives less attention than some other electric models, the Equinox EV has become General Motors’ best-selling EV.
The report states that Chevrolet sold 57,954 Equinox EVs last year, compared with 274,356 gasoline-powered Equinox models. During the first half of 2026, the lower-priced Bolt reduced some of the Equinox EV’s sales momentum, but the electric crossover still led GM’s EV lineup with 16,249 units sold.
Replacement Could Arrive as a 2029 Model
The Equinox EV was first introduced in 2022 and was originally expected to reach dealerships in 2023. According to the report, deliveries did not begin until early 2024.
Motor1 reports that Chevrolet plans to reveal the replacement in late 2028 before launching it as a 2029 model. That timeline would give the current generation a production run of about five years before being replaced.
GM Continues to Expand Its EV Strategy
The reported development of a new electric vehicle platform suggests General Motors continues to invest in future EV products. According to the report, additional models, including future versions of the Blazer EV, Cadillac Optiq, and Cadillac Vistiq, could eventually transition to the same architecture.
