American enthusiasts have long embraced rugged, boxy utility vehicles, investing heavily in models such as the Land Rover Defender and Ford Bronco. The Denza Bao 5 now emerges as a new challenger from China, offering a familiar utilitarian silhouette while introducing an advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain beneath its squared-off exterior.
Despite its premium interior appointments, the Bao 5 is built on a robust ladder-frame chassis using a dedicated dual-mode off-road architecture. The SUV is powered by a longitudinally mounted 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine working alongside two electric motors.
Together, the hybrid system produces a combined 544 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque. That output enables the nearly three-ton SUV to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds.
Off-Road Engineering Focuses on Capability
The Bao 5 incorporates three differential locks and an active hydraulic suspension system designed to increase ride height for clearing large obstacles. In its highest setting, the SUV provides 12.2 inches of ground clearance.
Its 31.8 kWh battery pack is integrated directly into the steel chassis, similar to Hyundai’s patent, providing additional structural rigidity and protection from rock strikes.
The battery delivers just over 50 miles of electric driving before the gasoline engine engages, offering extended driving capability during remote trips.
Pricing and Market Availability
The Denza Bao 5 is currently aimed at markets across Europe and Australia. The BAO 5 starts at $93,703 in the Elegance specification, while the flagship Ultimate model starts at $106,350.
