Pontiac G6 GXP arrived in 2008 as the brand’s high-performance version of its midsize sedan, combining a more powerful V6 engine with aggressive styling. Introduced as Pontiac expanded its GXP performance lineup, the model delivered stronger acceleration but generated mixed reactions because of its bold design and driving dynamics.
Pontiac Expanded Its Performance Ambitions
By 2008, Pontiac was facing declining sales after two difficult years. As the brand increasingly emphasized performance, it introduced GXP models alongside vehicles such as the G8 and Torrent.
The G6 had debuted in 2005 as the replacement for the Grand Am, offering updated styling and a choice of three engines, including two V6 options and one inline-four. Sport-oriented GT and GTP trims were also available.
The GT featured a 3.5-liter engine with suspension upgrades, improved brakes, and sportier styling, while the GTP added a more powerful 3.9-liter V6 and additional performance enhancements.
Sales were initially strong, reaching nearly 150,000 units in 2005 and exceeding that figure during each of the following three years.
The G6 GXP Brought More Power
Pontiac first previewed the G6 GXP as a concept at the 2004 SEMA show. The concept featured styling inspired by the contemporary GTO, Bilstein suspension, a 276-horsepower V6 engine, and a six-speed manual transmission.
Several years later, Pontiac officially introduced the production G6 GXP during its broader performance push.
The production model was powered by a high-output 3.6-liter V6 that had previously appeared in the GTP. Shared with vehicles including the Cadillac CTS and Chevrolet Malibu, the engine produced 252 horsepower and 251 lb-ft of torque in the G6 GXP.
The front-wheel-drive sedan accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.2 seconds, compared with approximately 7.7 seconds for the G6 GT.
Styling Became the Most Controversial Feature
While the original G6 had been praised for modernizing Pontiac’s styling, the GXP adopted a much more aggressive appearance.
The updated model featured a redesigned front fascia with larger openings, an aerodynamic body package, larger wheels, and dual stainless-steel exhaust outlets.
Pontiac also introduced a Street Edition package that added hood vents and a large “hammerhead” rear spoiler. The package was available on GT models as well, along with revised fascias and new wheels designed to resemble the GXP.
Performance Improvements Came With Trade-Offs
Although the G6 GXP offered noticeably stronger straight-line performance than the GT, reviews cited shortcomings in other areas.
According to the article, journalists criticized the suspension for poor damping and overly firm springs. The GXP retained the same “Sport” suspension as the GT, with stickier tires serving as the primary hardware difference.
The six-speed manumatic transmission was also criticized for slow gear changes during spirited driving, while the braking system received more favorable remarks.
The GXP carried a price premium of about $4,000 over the GT while primarily offering increased acceleration.
A Short-Lived Model
The Pontiac G6 GXP entered the market during the Great Recession, limiting its opportunity to establish itself. Two years later, Pontiac was discontinued by General Motors.
GM never released separate sales figures for the G6 GXP, but estimates cited in the article place production at around 2,500 units.
Although its styling and overall execution divided opinion, the Pontiac G6 GXP remains one of the more distinctive performance sedans produced during the brand’s final years.
