A Nissan Rogue sustained significant front-end damage after colliding with a loose tire that bounced across the median on Interstate 76 in Philadelphia. The crash, which occurred around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday near Girard Avenue, was captured by the external cameras of what appeared to be a Tesla Model Y traveling slightly ahead of the Rogue.
Loose Tire Strikes Nissan Rogue on I-76
According to 6abc, the incident happened near Girard Avenue on Interstate 76. It remains unclear where the loose tire came from, but the impact caused extensive damage to the Nissan Rogue’s front end.
The footage shows the Nissan Rogue, identified as an outgoing third-generation model, appearing to brake just before the tire entered the frame. It is unclear whether the braking was initiated by the driver or triggered by an automatic emergency-braking system.
Based on the video, the driver appeared to have very little time to react, and there was limited space available to avoid the tire, making the collision appear nearly unavoidable.
Tesla Camera Captures the Crash
The Tesla owner told 6abc that he heard the impact but did not immediately realize what had happened. He only understood the nature of the crash after reviewing the recorded footage.
The video also shows that no vehicle was traveling directly behind the Nissan Rogue at the moment of impact.
Detached Wheels Remain a Road Hazard
Incidents involving wheels separating from vehicles are not uncommon. In 2023, a Kia Soul gained widespread attention after a wheel detached from a Chevrolet Silverado traveling in an adjacent lane on a Los Angeles freeway. The wheel struck the Kia, sending it several feet into the air before it landed on its roof and rolled back onto its wheels.
Cause of the Incident Still Unknown
For drivers caught in the path of a runaway wheel, avoiding a collision can be extremely difficult, particularly at highway speeds. Proper wheel installation can help prevent some incidents, with lug nuts requiring even tightening to the manufacturer’s specified torque. Under-tightening can allow lug nuts to loosen, while over-tightening can stretch or weaken wheel studs and potentially cause them to fail.
No official findings have been released regarding the cause of the Nissan Rogue incident. If negligence led to the wheel detaching, the crash could result in a lawsuit seeking damages and compensation for injuries. Given the extensive damage to the front end and windshield, the compact crossover will likely require costly repairs.
There have been no reports of anyone being seriously hurt in the incident.
