A newly spotted BMW M2 CS prototype suggests BMW M is continuing development work on the high-performance coupe nearly four years after the second-generation M2 debuted. While the camouflage does not appear to hide any obvious visual changes, the test vehicle indicates the automaker is working on something related to the M2 CS.
BMW Continues Refining the G87 M2
It has been nearly four years since BMW introduced the second-generation M2. Since then, the company has continued refining the G87 platform with increased horsepower and torque, the limited-run M2 CS, and the recently launched M2 xDrive.
With the compact sports coupe reportedly expected to remain in production for about three more years, development of the model appears to be ongoing.
Camouflaged Prototype Points to M2 CS Development
A new spy video shows what appears to be a prototype connected to the BMW M2 CS. The car features the distinctive ducktail rear spoiler that sets the CS apart from other M2 variants, making it unlikely to be a standard M2 test vehicle.
The camouflage covering the front and rear sections does not appear to conceal any noticeable styling changes compared with the already revealed M2 CS. Even so, BMW’s decision to disguise the prototype suggests the company is evaluating something beyond the existing production model.
The visible camouflage also does not appear to indicate aerodynamic upgrades derived from the recently introduced M Performance Track Kit.
Possible Hardware Changes Remain Unconfirmed
While BMW has not disclosed what the prototype is testing, two possible hardware changes have been suggested: a manual transmission or an all-wheel-drive configuration.
A combination of both appears unlikely, as all BMW M models equipped with xDrive are offered exclusively with automatic transmissions.
Manual or xDrive Could Shape a Future Special Edition
The possibility of a manual-transmission M2 CS has gained attention following the return of the BMW M3 CS with a three-pedal Handschalter. At the same time, the arrival of the all-wheel-drive M2 creates the potential for an M2 CS with xDrive, although it may still be too early for such a model.
Company officials have not ruled out an M2 CSL. If approved, it would likely serve as the final version of the G87 generation, with such a model not expected before 2028.
Prototype May Support Future BMW M Development
Another possibility is that the camouflaged vehicle is serving as a development platform for components intended for a future BMW M model rather than a new M2 special edition.
Whatever the purpose, the camouflage has made the prototype more noticeable instead of helping it blend into everyday traffic.
BMW M has not revealed what the prototype is testing, but the latest sighting confirms development work involving the M2 CS or related technology is continuing.
