Audi RS 6 is once again the subject of speculation after a new report claimed the next-generation performance model has been delayed until March 2027 and could replace its twin-turbocharged V8 with a plug-in hybrid V6. However, previous statements from Audi executives and other reports point toward a different outcome.
Report Suggests RS 6 Launch Has Been Delayed
According to The Supercar Blog, the next-generation C9 Audi RS 6, which is expected to be offered in both sedan and Avant wagon body styles, will debut in March 2027 instead of by the end of 2026 as previously forecast.
The report also claims the current 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine will be replaced by a twin-turbocharged V6 plug-in hybrid powertrain similar to the one used in the RS 5.
Previous Statements Point Toward Continued V8 Power
Several earlier developments appear to support continued use of a V8 engine in the next RS 6.
In April, Audi Sport boss Rolf Michl said the RS 6 would maintain its own identity within the RS lineup rather than becoming a copy of the RS 5.
The following month, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner said he is “a big fan of V8 [power].” He added that the engine is ideal for full-size SUVs, referencing what later became the Audi SQ9. While the RS 6 is not an SUV, it is also not as compact as the RS 5.
Another Report Points to a Plug-In Hybrid V8
Days after Audi revealed the Nuvolari limited-edition supercar in June, Autocar reported that the next-generation RS 6 would feature a plug-in hybrid V8 powertrain producing as much as 730 horsepower.
That report also stated the hybrid V8 would complement an all-electric RS e-tron. However, the electric model is now rumored to have been canceled.
Audi has not commented on speculation surrounding future products.
Conflicting Reports Leave Questions Unanswered
The latest report from The Supercar Blog conflicts with the earlier information reported by Autocar, leaving the powertrain plans for the next-generation RS 6 uncertain.
Until Audi provides official details, the launch timing and engine specifications remain unconfirmed.
