A newly spotted BMW M2 CS prototype has fueled speculation that BMW may be preparing another high-performance variant of its compact sports coupe. Although the G87-generation M2 is already available in rear-wheel drive, xDrive all-wheel drive, and CS form, a camouflaged test vehicle suggests the automaker could have additional plans before the model’s production concludes.
Camouflaged Prototype Raises Questions
The G87 BMW M2 is expected to remain in production for another three model years, giving BMW time to expand the lineup. A recently shared Instagram video shows what appears to be an M2 CS undergoing testing with camouflage covering its front and rear sections.
The reason for disguising a model that has already been revealed remains unclear. However, the prototype’s appearance has prompted several possible explanations.
Several Possible Performance Variants
The test vehicle is not equipped with the aggressive M Performance Track Kit available for the standard M2, nor does it feature the additional aerodynamic components seen on the M4 CSL. One possibility is that BMW is evaluating an early development vehicle before CSL-specific bodywork is added.
Another theory is that BMW could be developing a lower-output version of the M2 CS with a Handschalter package. Such a model would combine the M2 CS chassis with reduced power to accommodate a manual transmission.
The concept of the M3 CS Handschalter originated with a small group in North America rather than BMW headquarters in Bavaria, yet it has reportedly become a major success. A similar strategy for the M2 could further expand BMW’s range of performance-focused special editions.
An AWD M2 CS Could Also Be Under Development
Another possibility is that the prototype represents an all-wheel-drive version of the M2 CS. With the G80 M3 entering its final model year as the 2027 model, a more powerful M2 equipped with xDrive could fit into the lineup without overlapping too closely with the larger performance sedan.
Such an approach could also leave room for a manual-transmission M2 CS to arrive later as a farewell edition before the G87 generation reaches the end of its production run.
What Comes Next
The 2027 BMW M2 has only recently launched with xDrive available for the first time, so the purpose of the camouflaged prototype may not become clear for some time. Based on current expectations, the final production version is not anticipated before next year, while a manual-transmission M2 CS, if developed, could arrive in 2028.
BMW continues to evaluate how buyers will respond to the upcoming Neue Klasse generation of M models, despite those vehicles also including gasoline-powered variants. With the G87 M2 becoming one of BMW M’s most successful models during one of the brand’s most debated design eras, the automaker appears positioned to further develop the current platform before introducing its next-generation successor.
