BMW is responding to criticism after a Spider-Man-themed promotion appeared on iDrive infotainment systems in vehicles across more than 70 markets. The limited-time campaign, delivered through an over-the-air software update, prompted debate among owners about promotional content appearing inside vehicles they already own.

Spider-Man Promotion Arrived Through BMW OTA Update

In late July 2026, BMW owners began seeing promotional content for Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day on their vehicles’ iDrive infotainment screens after receiving an over-the-air (OTA) software update.

The update was sent to BMW models built after July 2020 running iDrive Operating Systems 7 through X. It added Spider-Man-themed graphics and animations to the company’s Festive App, a feature typically used to display seasonal or occasion-based messages on the central touchscreen.

Drivers who opened the app, and some who simply started their vehicles, encountered a full-color banner promoting the film. Some reports also described an animation connected to the movie’s release.

Campaign Was Part of a Broader BMW and Sony/Marvel Partnership

The promotion was scheduled to run through August 10, 2026, as part of a wider marketing partnership between BMW and Sony/Marvel. The collaboration also included BMW vehicle product placement in the film and a special-edition iX3 displayed at the Los Angeles premiere.

The campaign was not visible in every market. Owners in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia reported that the promotion did not appear on their vehicles.

Owners Voice Concerns Over In-Car Promotional Content

The reaction centered less on the movie itself and more on where the promotion appeared. Many owners objected to promotional content appearing on the same infotainment display they use each time they start their vehicles.

Owners shared their reactions across social media, while Reddit discussions and YouTube videos showing the feature generated large numbers of critical comments. Many users called for the feature to be removed.

Previous BMW Statements Drew Renewed Attention

The discussion also revisited comments made by BMW in December 2023. At an industry roundtable, Stephan Durach, BMW Group’s senior vice president for connected company development, said the company had no interest in turning vehicle dashboards into advertising space, reportedly describing the screen as “a private space” that was not intended for commercials.

The criticism also followed BMW’s earlier subscription model for heated seats that were already physically installed in vehicles. BMW executives later publicly acknowledged that the approach was “probably not the best way to start,” while the practice itself was not discontinued.

BMW Says the Feature Was Not Advertising

In response to the criticism, BMW rejected the suggestion that the Spider-Man content constituted advertising.

“As many of the other stories have noted, the in-vehicle animation is part of a much broader brand partnership which included product placement in the movie and a special edition vehicle on the red carpet of the Los Angeles premiere. This was only intended to be a fun experience which celebrates that our vehicles are featured in the new movie. It is available for a limited time and only visible to drivers who proactively initiate it on their vehicle’s touch screen. BMW has no plans to introduce advertising into its vehicles, and we remain committed to ensuring that our customers are in control of their in-vehicle experience.”

BMW also said the Festive App is designed to provide optional themed animations and messages tied to global and local occasions, maintaining that it is not an advertising platform. The company added that the content is available only when the vehicle is stationary and requires drivers to actively open the feature rather than appearing automatically during normal driving.

Campaign Generated Mixed Reactions

While many owners criticized the promotion, some coverage portrayed the episode as a company misjudging customer sentiment rather than a broader shift in strategy. The discussion unfolded amid ongoing owner sensitivity to subscription features and software-enabled services, with the Spider-Man promotion becoming the latest flashpoint in that debate.
