Tesla has confirmed that the U.S. version of the Model Y L will not include the upgraded actively cooled wireless charging pad that was previously listed as one of the SUV’s features. Instead, U.S. buyers will receive the same wireless charging system used in other Tesla models sold in North America.
Model Y L Introduced With Premium Features
The Tesla Model Y helped expand the company’s electric vehicle lineup following the success of the Model S, which launched more than a decade ago. Since then, Tesla has built 10 million electric vehicles and become the leading EV brand in the United States.
When Tesla introduced the three-row Model Y L in China last year, the SUV featured a new 50W wireless charging pad with active cooling. The upgraded charging system was designed to address complaints that Tesla’s existing 15W wireless charger could cause smartphones to overheat during charging.
Along with three-row seating, the Model Y L introduced several premium features that accompanied its starting price of $61,990.
U.S. Version Will Use Existing Charging Hardware
Just over a month ago, Tesla launched the Model Y L in the United States and Puerto Rico, listing the actively cooled wireless charging pad among the vehicle’s highlighted features.
The automaker has since confirmed that the U.S. version will instead use the same wireless charging hardware found in other North American Tesla models, including the standard Model Y.
According to the original report, Tesla said the upgraded charging pad is not being introduced because North America has not yet fully adopted the Qi2 wireless charging standard.
The report also notes that Apple iPhone 12 and newer models, the Google Pixel 10, and the Samsung Galaxy S25 support Qi2 wireless charging, although not necessarily at 50W.
Charging Pad Was a Key Feature in the Chinese Model
The actively cooled 50W wireless charging pad became one of the most discussed features of the Chinese-market Model Y L after its introduction.
However, buyers in the United States will not receive that hardware despite it previously appearing among the vehicle’s advertised features.
Feature Change Adds to Customer Concerns
The removal of the upgraded wireless charging pad follows criticism from some Tesla owners regarding issues including build quality, long-term reliability, software glitches, suspension wear, self-driving performance, and smartphone overheating during wireless charging.
The Model Y L will continue to be sold in the United States without the actively cooled charging system that is available on the version offered in China.
