Ford has shown dealers a prototype of an upcoming four-door Mustang, offering the clearest indication yet that the automaker could expand the iconic model beyond its traditional two-door body style. The prototype reportedly appeared at a dealer meeting in Las Vegas attended by Ford Executive Chair Bill Ford and CEO Jim Farley.
Ford Shows Dealers a Four-Door Mustang
Rumors of a Mustang sedan have circulated for years, but the Las Vegas dealer meeting provides a more concrete sign that Ford could be considering production of one. However, the project is not finalized, and Ford could still change course.
According to Automotive News, Ford displayed an early prototype in Las Vegas and allowed dealers to examine it closely. Dealers who saw the vehicle and spoke anonymously said its design resembles the Porsche Panamera.
Four-Door Mustang Could Start Under $40,000
Ford executives reportedly told dealers that the four-door Mustang would start at less than $40,000 if it reaches showrooms. The company is also targeting a 0-60 mph time of less than four seconds.
Ford is reportedly aiming to give the sedan more rear-seat space than a Panamera, combining performance with additional practicality in a Mustang-based four-door package.
Ford Could Target the End of the Decade
The timing for the four-door Mustang remains uncertain. One dealer told the Detroit Free Press that Ford is targeting the end of the decade, although it remains unclear whether that would mean 2028 or 2029.
The dealer who saw the prototype said its styling closely resembles the current Mustang, but with the proportions extended into a proper sedan. The design reportedly goes beyond simply adding two doors to the existing coupe.
Hybrid Powertrain Rumors Add Another Twist
The powertrain remains unknown. The Wall Street Journal reported that a couple of sources claim the four-door Mustang will be a hybrid, while one source mentioned the possibility of a hybrid V8.
Ford has also recently filed a trademark for “Mach 4” covering both gas and electric cars. The company has not said that the trademark is intended for the four-door Mustang, but its timing has added another potential clue about Ford’s plans.
For now, the four-door Mustang remains an upcoming possibility rather than a confirmed production model. Ford has shown dealers a prototype and outlined ambitious targets for price, performance and rear-seat space, while its timing, powertrain and final name remain uncertain.
