A new federal lawsuit against Mercedes-Benz alleges that raised metallic AMG emblems installed in certain Mercedes seats can become dangerously hot when exposed to direct sunlight. Two drivers claim the badges can retain enough heat to cause burns when they come into contact with a driver’s or passenger’s skin.
How the Mercedes-AMG Badge Can Become Hot
The lawsuit centers on the design of the affected AMG emblems. Unlike printed or stitched logos, the badges are made from metal, which can absorb and retain heat when a vehicle is parked in direct sunlight.
According to the plaintiffs, that can turn the emblem into a localized hot spot even when the surrounding seat is not nearly as hot.
One plaintiff alleges that an AMG badge became hot enough to leave an AMG-shaped burn mark on her skin. The lawsuit claims Mercedes knew or should have known about the potential risk but continued using the design.
If the allegations are ultimately substantiated, the case could raise questions about how cosmetic components inside vehicles are evaluated for occupant safety.
AMG Badge at Center of Federal Lawsuit
The case highlights how even small decorative components in luxury vehicles can become the focus of alleged engineering problems. The plaintiffs claim that an interior branding element can become a hazard under certain conditions.
The plaintiffs are seeking class-action status and damages, but the allegations have not been proven in court. Mercedes will have an opportunity to respond as the case progresses.
The lawsuit also does not establish that every vehicle equipped with the affected badges presents a safety hazard. For now, the AMG emblem remains at the center of the allegations made by the two drivers in the federal case.
