Volkswagen has officially unveiled the all-new 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, bringing a two-row cabin, coupe-like roofline and updated technology to the Atlas lineup. Sharing the new MQB Evo architecture with the seven-seat Atlas, the redesigned crossover is shorter and lower while retaining the broader design and powertrain changes introduced for the new generation.
2027 Atlas Cross Sport Takes a Sportier Shape
The new Atlas Cross Sport measures 195.6 inches long, making it 5.4 inches shorter than the seven-seat Atlas. It is also 2.1 inches lower, giving the two-row model a sportier stance, while body-colored rocker panels provide another visual distinction.
Beyond those changes, the second-generation Atlas Cross Sport shares much of its design with the new Atlas. Its two-row configuration and coupe-like roofline set it apart, creating a relationship similar to the BMW X5 and X6.
New Lighting and Redesigned Interior
At the front, the Atlas Cross Sport features double lightlines and an illuminated VW badge on all but the base trim. The new lighting signature uses a segmented, pixel-like design rather than the more traditional appearance of the outgoing model.
The same design theme continues at the rear, where a piano-black surround adds a more premium finish reminiscent of the Audi Q8.
Inside, Volkswagen has given the Atlas Cross Sport a cleaner, less-busy layout that makes the cabin look airier than the outgoing model. Gray wood trim comes standard, while buyers can select from Pebble Gray, Black and Medium Brown interior color palettes.
The two highest trims receive Varenna and Nappa leather, respectively, along with 30-color ambient lighting.
More Technology and Comfort Features
The redesigned Atlas Cross Sport features a revised 12-way ergonomic driver’s seat. Upper trims add thigh support and an improved full-back massage function for both the driver and front passenger.
The flagship trim can be equipped with a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system and a 15-inch infotainment screen. The base model instead receives a 12.9-inch display.
Other standard technology includes a 10.25-inch configurable Digital Cockpit Pro gauge cluster, updated Qi2 wireless charging that allows two devices to charge simultaneously, and five USB-C ports.
Updated Turbocharged Four-Cylinder Engine
Like the seven-seat Atlas, the new Atlas Cross Sport uses an updated 2.0-liter EA888 Evo5 turbocharged inline-four producing 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.
The new engine delivers a 13-hp increase over the outgoing engine but produces 15 lb-ft less torque. Volkswagen nevertheless expects the updated powertrain to deliver improved fuel economy.
An 8-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, while 4Motion all-wheel drive is available across the lineup.
Safety and Driver Assistance Upgrades
Volkswagen has also added safety and driver-assistance upgrades to the Atlas Cross Sport. A new front-center airbag brings the total number of airbags to seven.
The crossover also receives an improved IQ.DRIVE driver-assistance suite. Travel Assist, Volkswagen’s hands-on semi-automated driving system, now supports driver-initiated lane changes.
Hybrid Model Coming Later
Volkswagen will announce additional information, including pricing, closer to the all-new Atlas Cross Sport’s launch in early 2027.
A hybrid variant is planned for the model’s midcycle refresh, giving Volkswagen an electrified option as demand for hybrids grows in the U.S.
The hybrid addition would place the Atlas Cross Sport alongside competitors with electrified powertrains, including the Mazda CX-70. The Honda Passport and Chevrolet Blazer remain gas-only, however, giving Volkswagen another part of the market to consider as it prepares the next phase of the Atlas Cross Sport.
