BMW i Ventures is increasing its investment in artificial intelligence with a focus beyond autonomous driving, in-car assistants and manufacturing. The venture arm has invested in CodeRabbit, an AI-powered software review company that has raised $143 million in Series C funding.
CodeRabbit Reviews AI-Generated Software
The investment comes as companies, including automakers, increasingly rely on AI tools to write software. In a press release, BMW i Ventures said the rapid adoption of coding platforms such as Claude Code, Cursor and Codex is creating a new challenge: AI can generate code quickly, but the resulting software still needs to be evaluated.
CodeRabbit is designed to provide that review. Its platform analyzes each “pull request,” or proposed change to a software project, using information from the broader codebase, company standards, previous changes and isolated testing environments.
The system is intended to identify bugs, security issues and architectural problems before new code reaches production. While the platform can review AI-generated code, CodeRabbit also reviews software written by humans.
BMW Sees Independent AI Review as Key
BMW i Ventures views an independent review system as increasingly important as AI becomes more involved in software development. Rather than having the same AI platform generate and evaluate code, CodeRabbit can provide a separate validation layer that operates across different coding tools.
The venture-capital arm also highlighted enterprise requirements involving governance, security, compliance and company-specific coding standards as factors that could increase the value of the technology.
CodeRabbit is also expanding rapidly. BMW i Ventures said the company’s revenue increased more than fivefold year over year. Atomico, one of the co-leaders in the Series C, said CodeRabbit has become the most-installed AI code-review application across the major code-hosting platforms.
CodeRabbit serves more than 17,000 customers, including BMW. BMW i Ventures said the investment follows a two-year collaboration period between the two companies. Other customers include NVIDIA, Indeed and UC Davis.
CodeRabbit is likely one of five separate AI startups to receive funding from BMW i Ventures’ $300 million Fund III, which was announced earlier this year.
CodeRabbit Expands Beyond Code Reviews
The new funding comes alongside a broader expansion of CodeRabbit’s platform. Its new “Agentic Change Management” tools are designed to do more than review software changes.
The tools can determine which changes require human attention, explain how proposed changes could affect a larger software system and monitor deployed code for security problems.
The expansion could further align with BMW’s interest in the technology. Modern cars are increasingly software-defined products, while BMW relies on large software systems across engineering, manufacturing, logistics and digital services.
For BMW i Ventures, the CodeRabbit investment centers on maintaining software quality as AI-generated development accelerates. As AI writes more code, the company is betting on technology designed to determine whether that code can be trusted.
