Ford is preparing to launch the Fathom, an affordable electric pickup expected to start below $30,000. The upcoming truck is becoming a major focus for the automaker as Ford retools its Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky for production.

Ford Invests $2 Billion to Prepare for the Fathom

The Louisville Assembly Plant is a sprawling 3-million-square-foot facility that has undergone more than a year of production stoppages and retooling to prepare for the new electric truck.

Ford is investing $2 billion in the transformation. The facility previously served as a production hub for gasoline-powered vehicles, but the automaker is now adapting it for the Fathom and its new manufacturing system.

Workers spent months clearing the plant, and by February of this year, the facility had been stripped down in preparation for the installation of Ford’s Universal EV Production System, or UEV.

New Production System Will Build the Fathom Differently

The UEV system is designed to fundamentally change how vehicles are assembled at the Louisville facility. Instead of relying solely on a traditional production line, Ford describes the new approach as an “assembly tree,” allowing workers to build major vehicle sections in parallel before bringing them together into a single vehicle.

The investment and retooling program is expected to create 4,000 new jobs while introducing purpose-built equipment required for the UEV production system.

Fathom Production Will Use Three Major Sections

Ford has divided the Fathom’s major components along the production process into three primary sections: the front clip, rear clip and battery.

These sections will come together only after most of their components have already been installed. The approach is enabled in part by large unicastings, which replace dozens of individually stamped and welded pieces with a single large aluminum casting.

Prototypes Expected in 2027

The Louisville Assembly Plant is progressing toward prototype production. Ford expects teams and workers to be ready to begin building Fathom prototypes using qualified parts by early 2027.

Customer production vehicles are scheduled to arrive later in 2027, putting the affordable electric pickup on track for its planned launch.

Ford Targets Faster EV Production

Ford says implementing the UEV system will allow the Fathom to be assembled 40% faster than the products currently built at the Louisville Assembly Plant.

The combination of a newly retooled factory, the UEV manufacturing system and the Fathom’s targeted sub-$30,000 price could make the electric pickup an important test of Ford’s strategy for producing affordable EVs at scale.
