A new hybrid battery program for the McLaren P1 promises increased energy storage, lower weight and extended electric range, giving owners an alternative to the automaker’s costly replacement battery. V Engineering’s Project Continuum is designed specifically for the P1 and is scheduled to begin customer installations in Spring 2027.

McLaren P1 Battery Replacements Are Getting Expensive

The McLaren P1 has become a modern classic more than a decade after production ended, with auction prices reaching the seven-digit range. But maintaining the hybrid hypercar involves more than routine servicing as its battery technology ages.

The P1 was produced between 2013 and 2015, while some of its battery packs were manufactured as early as 2010. That means the oldest batteries are now 16 years old.

McLaren offered a replacement battery for about $160,000 back in 2022. V Engineering now believes it can offer P1 owners a more capable alternative, although its replacement ultimately comes with an even higher price.

V Engineering Promises a Lighter, More Capable Battery

V Engineering developed Project Continuum in collaboration with McLaren P1 engineers who were involved in the original hypercar’s development. The company says the new battery provides improved energy storage, reduced weight, extended EV range and no penalty to power delivery.

The system also uses glycol-based cooling to improve battery heat rejection and help maintain efficiency without losing performance because of overheating. Its 21700 lithium battery module was engineered to FIA Formula E standards.

V Engineering says the package is designed to bolt on and off and plug directly into the McLaren P1. No modifications are required because the system was developed to work with the vehicle’s existing hybrid architecture.

Battery Capacity Nearly Triples

The standard McLaren P1 battery has a capacity of 4.72 kWh. V Engineering’s replacement increases that figure to 12.4 kWh, while also reducing weight by 50.7 pounds, or 23 kilograms, compared with the McLaren power unit.

The combination of greater energy storage and lower weight is central to V Engineering’s pitch for the upgraded battery. The company says the system also maintains power delivery while providing extended EV range.

V Engineering Battery Costs More Than McLaren’s

Customer installations for the upgraded battery are scheduled for Spring 2027. V Engineering says several McLaren P1 owners from the Middle East, the UK, Europe and the United States are already in talks with the company.

The company offers global customer support and plans to provide long-term technical assistance. The battery program is also described as the first phase of a broader powertrain development plan for the McLaren P1.

Despite promising more capacity and lower weight, the V Engineering replacement costs more than McLaren’s $160,000 battery replacement price from 2022. CarBuzz contacted a V Engineering spokesperson and was quoted a price of 160,000 GBP, which is about $216,400 at today’s exchange rate.

A Costly New Option for P1 Owners

At roughly $216,400, V Engineering’s battery is more than $50,000 above the 2022 price McLaren charged for its replacement. The company’s Project Continuum nevertheless offers McLaren P1 owners a replacement designed around greater energy storage, reduced weight and extended electric capability.
