BYD is expanding its push into Europe’s premium car market, with a new design operation in Milan led by Wolfgang Egger, the former Audi design chief whose résumé also includes Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo and Seat. The strategy goes beyond making Chinese vehicles look European, with BYD aiming to design cars specifically for European buyers.

Denza Uses Milan as a European Design Base

Egger has led BYD’s design operation since 2016 and is now building a European design operation for Denza in Milan, one of the world’s major centers of fashion, architecture and industrial design.

In an interview with Autocar, Egger described the Milan design center as “the dedicated place for design research, mainly to capture European tastes and trends and translate them into design ideas for Denza and BYD.”

Denza represents BYD’s premium effort, and the Z9 GT provides an early look at the approach. The vehicle combines technology Chinese automakers have become known for with styling aimed directly at Europe’s premium market.

The Z9 GT features three-motor all-wheel drive, rear-wheel steering and a long list of electronic features, giving Denza substantial technology to highlight.

The Bigger Challenge Is Driving Dynamics

Technology and specifications are only part of the challenge facing Denza. Building a vehicle with impressive hardware is different from creating a car that feels predictable and confidence-inspiring at speed.

German automakers have spent decades developing that aspect of premium vehicles. Denza cannot reproduce that experience overnight, leaving the question of whether BYD’s chassis tuning and driving dynamics can match its ambitions.

BYD Targets German Luxury Brands

The strategy comes as Audi, BMW and Mercedes face competition beyond their traditional rivals. Chinese automakers are entering the market with increasingly sophisticated EVs, extensive battery expertise and a willingness to invest heavily in European expansion.

BYD does not necessarily need Denza to replace German luxury brands overnight. The immediate challenge is to demonstrate that a vehicle’s badge does not have to determine the buyer’s decision.

Technology and Scale Drive BYD’s Approach

BYD’s advantage is not decades of European brand heritage. Instead, the company is relying on the technology beneath its vehicles and the manufacturing scale needed to bring that technology into products quickly.

The broader strategy is focused on learning how to engineer vehicles for European roads and European expectations from within the company. For Denza, the central test is no longer simply whether its vehicles can look European, but whether buyers will eventually stop considering the brand’s Chinese origins when choosing a premium car.
