The BMW 8 Series appears to have reached another turning point. Production of the second-generation coupe ended earlier this year, and BMW has not included a direct replacement in its public plans. A new report offers insight into why the current 8 Series reportedly cannot simply transition into BMW’s Neue Klasse era, while leaving open the possibility that the automaker could preserve the grand-touring formula under a different name.

A Direct BMW 8 Series Successor Is Reportedly Not Feasible

According to Automotive News, a BMW executive said that “a straightforward transfer into the Neue Klasse world is not feasible.” The comment also noted that the outgoing 8 Series is now nearly a decade old.

The G15 8 Series Coupe arrived in 2018, followed by the G14 Convertible and G16 Gran Coupe. All three models used BMW’s CLAR architecture and shared engines, electronics and other components with several existing vehicles.

The lineup eventually ranged from the six-cylinder 840i to the V8-powered M850i and M8 Competition.

Moving that package into the Neue Klasse era would reportedly require much more than updated screens or revised styling. BMW’s latest vehicles introduce a new electronic architecture, iDrive X, different packaging priorities and an entirely new design language.

Keeping the 8 Series could therefore require substantial investment in a relatively low-volume family that previously included three body styles. That does not mean BMW is technically unable to develop another large coupe or Gran Coupe. Instead, the report indicates that carrying the existing 8 Series concept into the Neue Klasse generation is not considered practical.

The 8 Series Formula Could Survive Under Another Name

Automotive News also reports that an 8 Series successor developed through BMW ALPINA was “dismissed internally.” On its own, that would appear to eliminate another potential route for the model.

However, the Vision BMW ALPINA adds another possibility. The 5.2-meter-long concept features a low stance, an elongated coupe-style roof, seating for four adults and a V8 engine. Its basic proportions closely follow the template of the discontinued 8 Series Gran Coupe.

BMW describes the Vision as a one-off design study rather than a confirmed production vehicle, while also saying it points toward the future direction of BMW ALPINA.

The first production model from the relaunched brand will be inspired by the 7 Series and arrive next year. Still, the Vision’s proportions suggest that BMW sees room for another fast, luxurious grand tourer. Such a model could retain much of the 8 Series’ character while moving further upmarket and carrying a different badge.

Could the BMW 6 Series Return?

Another possibility is the return of the 6 Series. An ALPINA B6 revival would have considerable historical justification, as ALPINA offered B6 variants based on both the E63 and F12 generations.

Those models combined V8 performance with a more comfort-focused character than the corresponding M6. A new B6 could also sit below BMW ALPINA’s expected flagship, giving the brand a slightly more attainable coupe or four-door grand tourer.

Nothing has been confirmed, however, and BMW has repeatedly resisted rumors of a 6 Series revival.

The BMW 8 Series Is Gone for Now

For now, the 8 Series and any true BMW halo grand tourer are gone. The latest report indicates that directly carrying the current 8 Series into the Neue Klasse era is not considered feasible, while BMW’s other concepts and potential nameplates leave open the possibility of a future grand-tourer formula under a different identity.
