The BMW M2 CS has raised the performance ceiling for BMW’s compact sports coupe, but the G87-generation M2 may still have more to offer. A new report from Bimmerpost suggests BMW could be considering another special M2, with an all-wheel-drive CS among the possibilities.

BMW M2 CS Leaves Room for More

The BMW M2 CS is lighter, faster and stronger than the M2 Competition, taking the sports coupe to another level while highlighting the potential of the G87 platform.

The current generation is also expected to remain in production for some time. Following BMW’s typical seven-year life cycle, the next generation is not expected until at least 2030, leaving room for additional versions of the current M2.

All-Wheel-Drive M2 CS Could Be Next

A reliable thread on Bimmerpost reportedly leaked information suggesting BMW may be developing another special M2. While specific details have not yet been provided, the possibility of an all-wheel-drive version of the M2 CS has been raised.

The current rear-wheel-drive M2 CS can already accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 4 seconds. Additional traction from an all-wheel-drive system could potentially reduce that time even further.

The M2 CS produces 523 hp, matching the output of the M3 Competition while packaging that power into a smaller and more agile body. In a review, it was described as “the M car to get” and one “that makes you invent excuses to drive it.”

An all-wheel-drive version could reduce some of the car’s sideways action, but it would not necessarily take away from the driving fun.

BMW M2 CSL Also Rumored

An all-wheel-drive M2 CS is not the only possibility being discussed. There is also a strong possibility of a CSL version of the M2.

Earlier this month, a camouflaged M2 was spotted being shaken down around the Nürburgring, adding to speculation surrounding that possibility. The prototype did not feature a large rear wing, although its track pack could offer another indication of what BMW may be developing.

A Manual M2 CS Could Also Be Possible

Another potential version is a manual M2 CS, following the approach used with the M3 CS Handschalter.

That model was mainly a special project developed by BMW North America, but its success may have encouraged BMW’s product planners in Munich to consider giving the smaller coupe similar treatment.

Whatever version may come next, the possibilities suggest BMW is continuing to explore what it can do with the G87 M2 platform.
