Porsche is expanding access to motorsports with the new Porsche 911 Challenge, a turnkey race car based on the road-going 911 GT3. Developed with lower operating and spare parts costs in mind, the 911 Challenge is positioned as Porsche’s new entry point into its race-car lineup.

Porsche’s New Entry-Level Race Car

The 911 Challenge occupies the bottom of Porsche’s race-car hierarchy, a position previously held by the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport and its successor, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport. With 718 production ending last year, the 911 has taken over that role.

The new 911 Challenge joins the 911 GT4 R, which Porsche introduced in June. The 911 GT4 R is designed for racing series that align with FIA GT4 regulations, while the 911 Challenge was developed primarily for one-make racing series.

One-make racing has grown in popularity globally in recent years. Porsche already competes in this format with the 911 Cup, but its high cost and competitive level make those series difficult to reach for most amateur drivers.

The 911 Challenge is designed to lower that barrier. It starts at $275,000, roughly matching the average transaction price of a 911 GT3 road car today and coming in at close to half the cost of the 911 Cup.

911 GT3 Parts Help Keep Costs Down

The lower purchase price is only part of what Porsche says makes the 911 Challenge more accessible. Unlike the 911 Cup and other 911-based race cars that depend on extensive lists of specialized parts, the 911 Challenge shares a significant number of components with the GT3 road car.

That includes the naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine. In the 911 Challenge, it produces 508 horsepower, compared with 502 horsepower in the road car. The primary difference is the absence of a particulate filter in the race car’s exhaust system.

The 911 Challenge also retains most of the GT3’s aerodynamic features, along with its seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission and paddle shifters. Most of the interior controls are shared as well, although some have been reassigned to operate racing-specific functions.

Features including air conditioning, ABS, stability control and traction control have also been retained to make the transition into motorsports easier.

Track-Focused Chassis Changes

The largest differences from the road car are found in the chassis. The 911 Challenge uses dampers recalibrated specifically for track driving and adds a new anti-roll bar with three adjustable positions.

The wheels retain a standard five-bolt mounting pattern rather than center-lock hardware and are fitted with racing slick tires. Steel brake rotors are also used.

911 Challenge Targets the 2027 Racing Season

Porsche plans to begin deliveries in time for the 2027 motorsports season. Entrants in the Porsche Motorsport North America-backed Porsche Sprint Trophy Porsche Owners Club will receive priority.

The 911 Challenge is also anticipated to be eligible for other U.S. racing series, including the Porsche Sprint and Endurance Challenge North America by Yokohama and the Porsche Sprint Trophy Porsche Club of America.

With its $275,000 starting price, shared GT3 components and track-focused chassis, the Porsche 911 Challenge gives drivers a new way to enter Porsche’s motorsports lineup while keeping the car closely connected to its road-going counterpart.
