Stellantis is preparing to return the Jeep brand to Chinese assembly lines four years after halting local manufacturing, with a newly announced strategic partnership focused on producing electrified vehicles for global markets. The agreement will use local engineering capabilities and marks the first time China-made vehicles carrying the Jeep badge will be exported internationally.

Stellantis and Dongfeng Form $1.2 Billion Joint Venture

At the center of the strategy is an 8.2 billion yuan ($1.2 billion) joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Group called Dongfeng Stellantis Automotive Technology Co. Based in Wuhan, the venture will focus on vehicle development and marketing, while existing Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen Automobile (DPCA) facilities will handle manufacturing.

The joint venture is expected to launch four new models, including two Peugeot vehicles and two electrified Jeeps.

Under the agreement, Dongfeng will lead research and development while providing core electrification architectures and intelligent vehicle technologies. Stellantis will contribute brand heritage, design concepts and its international distribution network.

CEO Antonio Filosa confirmed that the new electric SUVs and plug-in hybrid models are scheduled to begin production in 2027 for worldwide delivery.

Dongfeng to Provide EV Technology

Dongfeng brings established electric-vehicle technical capabilities to the partnership. The company manufactures premium electric models through its Voyah brand, as well as heavy-duty, multi-powertrain electrified off-roaders under its Mengshi marque.

Those existing off-road and battery-electric platforms will provide the technical foundation for developing Jeep products designed for dual-purpose use.

Jeep’s China Market Collapse

The return comes after a sharp decline in Jeep sales in China. When Jeep’s previous joint venture with GAC Group collapsed, annual sales had dropped from a 2017 peak of 203,000 units to roughly 20,000 in 2022.

Western legacy automakers were caught unprepared as Chinese consumers rapidly shifted toward domestic new-energy vehicles. That change exposed significant vulnerabilities in traditional internal combustion lineups.

China Becomes an Export Strategy

By tapping Dongfeng’s technological base, Stellantis is adopting a strategy already used by Volkswagen, General Motors and Nissan. Working with a Chinese manufacturer allows legacy automakers to accelerate EV development cycles while reducing capital expenditures.

For Stellantis, the renewed presence in China is designed not only to address its previous market collapse but also to establish the country as a high-tech, cost-effective export hub for global distribution beginning in 2027.

The partnership represents a major shift in Stellantis’ approach to China as the automaker prepares to use local technology, engineering and manufacturing capabilities to support its global electrified-vehicle strategy.
