Some 2024 to 2026 Chevrolet Equinox models equipped with GM’s 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder LSD engine are reportedly experiencing overheating and air conditioning problems. General Motors has issued a service bulletin addressing the issue, including diagnostic code P0494, which indicates that cooling fan speed is too low.
Chevrolet Equinox Cooling and A/C Problems
The affected Equinox models use the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, which GM says can develop cooling and A/C issues. The service bulletin specifically identifies diagnostic trouble code P0494, described as “cooling fan speed too low.”
The issue involves the G10 cooling fan motor, which plays a critical role in moving air through the vehicle’s cooling system. According to GM, the fan motor should be replaced with the latest service part to address the problem.
How the Cooling Fan Failure Can Cause Overheating
The cooling fans provide airflow to both the radiator and condenser, linking the engine cooling and air conditioning systems. In the Equinox, the ECU controls fan operation and adjusts fan speed based on system temperatures and A/C system pressure.
When the fan fails, the engine may not receive enough airflow to maintain proper temperatures. That can result in engine overheating while also causing the A/C system to blow hot air.
Engine overheating can create additional concerns related to durability. Constant exposure to temperatures above what engine components can handle can potentially result in a blown motor, creating a significant inconvenience and potential lawsuit risk.
No Recall Has Been Issued
GM has not issued a recall for the issue so far. Instead, technicians are advised to perform the engine coolant fan replacement procedure referenced in Bulletin 26-NA-210.
GM Authority reported on the issue, presenting the information as useful guidance rather than a call for a recall. The overheating problem remains tied to a faulty component that can affect both engine cooling and A/C performance.
For the affected 2024 to 2026 Chevrolet Equinox models with the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder GM LSD engine, GM’s stated repair is to replace the G10 cooling fan motor with the latest service part.
