The Mazda MX-5 Miata emerged as the clear sales leader among three of America’s remaining affordable sports cars in August 2026, outselling the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 combined as buyers continued to show demand for lightweight, enthusiast-focused models.

Miata Leads August Sports Car Sales

Affordable rear-wheel-drive sports cars have become increasingly limited in the United States, with the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Subaru BRZ, and Toyota GR86 among the remaining options. Summer is a key buying season for these vehicles, and newly released August sales figures showed that a small but dedicated group of buyers remains interested in the segment.

None of the three models surpassed 1,000 sales in August, but the Miata and BRZ both posted year-over-year gains. The Miata recorded 925 sales, up 10.1% from 840 units in August 2025.

The Miata’s total included a nearly even split between its two body styles, with 505 convertible models sold alongside 420 RF retractable hardtops.

August 2026 Sales Comparison

  • Mazda MX-5 Miata: 925 sales, compared with 840 in August 2025, up 10.1%
  • Subaru BRZ: 235 sales, compared with 220 in August 2025, up 6.5%
  • Toyota GR86: 512 sales, compared with 987 in August 2025

While the sales totals remain relatively small, the growth recorded by the Miata and BRZ offers a positive sign for the segment. Continued purchases demonstrate that demand remains for affordable, entry-level sports cars.

Miata Also Holds the Year-to-Date Lead

Sales through the first eight months of 2026 follow a similar pattern. The Mazda MX-5 Miata remains the most popular of the three, with 6,909 units sold, up 2.0% year-over-year.

The Toyota GR86 ranks second with 5,182 sales, though that figure represents a 30.5% decline. The Subaru BRZ remains third with 2,020 units sold, down 4.1%.

The results differ somewhat from July, when the BRZ was the only model in the trio to post a year-over-year sales increase. Subaru sold 233 BRZs that month, just 11 more than during the same month a year earlier.

During July, GR86 sales fell 36.3% to 663 units, while Miata deliveries declined 16.3% to 974 vehicles.

Subaru WRX Shows Stronger Sales Growth

While sales of the Miata, BRZ, and GR86 remain modest, Subaru’s WRX has posted considerably stronger growth. WRX sales are up 37.7% for the year, with 10,324 vehicles sold so far.

In August alone, the all-wheel-drive sports sedan delivered 1,778 units, a 191% increase from August 2025.

What’s New With the Miata, BRZ and GR86?

Mazda, Subaru, and Toyota have continued making updates to their sports cars. The Miata received a new Zinc Green Metallic color, while rumors have suggested Mazda could be preparing a fifth generation of the sports car, although no launch date has been confirmed.

The Subaru BRZ is receiving a revised manual shifter that benefits from knowledge the company is gaining through racing in Japan. The exact changes have not been detailed, but the expectation is that the motorsport experience will improve the feel of shifting through the gears.

Toyota has kept the GR86 fresh through several special editions. Models including the Hakone Edition and Trueno Edition reference the car’s spiritual connection to the AE86 Corolla as a legendary platform for drifting.

Small Numbers Define a Niche Segment

The Miata won the August 2026 sales race among the three affordable sports cars, but the figures remain small in the broader auto market. The BRZ, MX-5, and GR86 are niche products that appeal to a specific demographic, as two-seat roadsters and cramped 2+2 coupes are not practical for many buyers with families, pets, or other daily transportation needs.

Based on sales through August, the Miata is positioned to finish 2026 ahead of the Toyobaru twins in the affordable sports car segment. Third-quarter 2026 sales figures, expected in early October, will provide a clearer comparison of whether the Miata can outsell the BRZ and GR86 combined.
