Scout Motors has unveiled two new Scout Traveler concepts as it continues preparing its battery-electric SUV and Terra pickup for production, with customer deliveries expected to begin in 2028. The concepts, called Mountainside and trail-ready, make their first public appearance during Labor Day weekend in Colorado alongside the Terra pickup.

Scout Prepares for Production in South Carolina

Scout Motors still has significant work ahead before the Traveler SUV and Terra pickup reach American roads. A top priority is completing the company’s $2 billion assembly plant in Blythewood, South Carolina.

Once the body shop and paint shop are ready, and the state completes dedicated highway access, pre-series production will begin. Assembly of salable vehicles is expected to follow, likely in 2028.

While customers wait, Scout’s product-development team is beginning to introduce concepts that could potentially become production trim levels or variants.

Two Scout Traveler Concepts Make Public Debut

Visitors attending the Jazz Aspen Snowmass music festival in Colorado over Labor Day weekend may see the two concepts, which take distinctly different approaches to the Traveler SUV.

The Mountainside concept is designed to give the Traveler a more refined and premium character. The other, simply called “trail-ready”, is aimed at ambitious off-roaders.

The trail-ready concept features 35-inch off-road tires mounted on 18-inch beadlock wheels, along with full-metal front and rear bumpers, a front winch, and rear tow hooks.

Mountainside Concept Emphasizes Premium Design

Scout painted the Mountainside concept in a deep brown finish called Morning Dusk. The exterior is described as charcoal-brown with subtle golden metallic highlights that become visible in direct sunlight.

The concept also features a panoramic sunroof and 22-inch Vault anodized black wheels wrapped in 35-inch rubber.

Scout’s marketing team described the concept’s character this way: “Its design evokes the feeling of returning home after a long day outdoors: warm, welcoming, and built around authentic materials that become more personal with time.”

Trail-Ready Concept Pushes Rugged Capability

The trail-ready Traveler is painted Galvanized Steel silver and draws inspiration from “raw metal, honest utility, and equipment built to withstand demanding environments.”

An elevated black roof rack sits above a white roof, creating visual contrast while emphasizing the concept’s functional character. Additional accessories include rock rails and an exterior spare-tire carrier.

Scout Says Production Interiors Have Not Been Announced

Like their exterior designs, the interiors of the Mountainside and trail-ready concepts remain experimental. A Scout spokesperson told CarBuzz via email, “We’re looking to see what consumers like and are interested in. We haven’t announced any production interiors yet.”

Scout has previously displayed interiors in the Terra and Traveler, and the latest concepts continue those familiar design themes.

The Mountainside interior uses a color palette Scout calls Alpine District, featuring semi-aniline leather and earthy recycled walnut trim on the instrument panel and doors. Custom gray woven fabrics incorporate elements of the plaid found in historic Scout interiors.

Though not identical, the Mountainside cabin closely resembles the gray leather interior displayed earlier this year in the Terra truck in Michigan.

Brick Red Cabin Theme for the Trail-Ready Traveler

Scout did not release interior images for the trail-ready Traveler. However, the automaker said the concept uses a version of the Brick Red cabin previously shown in the Traveler in March.

Scout calls the trail-ready interior Denim District, inspired by “durable American workwear and the Scout brand’s agricultural roots.” The company said the concept emphasizes modern design, function, durability, and character.

Scout Says 2028 Delivery Timeline Remains Unchanged

Scout said this week that it has started testing and validating early prototype vehicles “as it prepares for production, with customer deliveries expected to begin in 2028.”

As of this past spring, 160,000 potential customers had placed $100 deposits for a Scout vehicle.

Volkswagen Group announced four years ago that it was reviving the Scout brand with an electric truck and SUV to be built in the United States. The Traveler and Terra were revealed in October 2024, along with confirmation that an extended-range powertrain would be available.

Since then, the Trump administration canceled federal EV tax credits and imposed tariffs on imported vehicles, two actions that have affected the VW Group’s bottom line.

Scout CEO Scott Keogh has maintained that the brand’s rollout timeline remains unchanged and has not been delayed. AutoForecast Solutions, however, continues to report that production of the Terra pickup truck could be pushed back to 2030.

Colorado Debut Puts Scout Concepts Before an Off-Road Audience

The debut of the Mountainside and trail-ready concepts in Colorado gives Scout an opportunity to gauge public reaction while reminding consumers in an important EV market that its vehicles remain in development. The company is also facing legal challenges related to its direct-to-consumer sales model.

Colorado’s popularity as an off-roading region could make it a fitting setting for the trail-ready concept. With both concepts based on the Traveler rather than the Terra, the debut also puts renewed attention on the SUV as Scout continues working toward its planned 2028 customer deliveries.
