The 2027 Volvo XC40 is getting a modest refresh rather than a full redesign, keeping the model as Volvo’s most affordable gas-powered SUV in the U.S. The update brings revised exterior styling, a larger infotainment screen, Google Gemini software, and a significantly upgraded sensor suite.

2027 Volvo XC40 Updates Stay Focused

The XC40 is technically not Volvo’s cheapest model in the U.S., as the EX30 undercuts it by roughly $1,000. However, it remains the brand’s most affordable gas-powered SUV and its third-best-selling nameplate in the country, a position it has held since 2018.

For 2027, Volvo has opted for a conservative refresh instead of a complete redesign. The exterior changes focus on updated lighting and revised bodywork.

The XC40 now features new “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlight graphics that extend from the edges of the front fascia into the grille. Volvo has also reshaped the tailgate with more pronounced horizontal creases and revised the brake light graphic.

Larger Screen and Google Gemini

Inside, the infotainment display grows from 9 inches to 11.2 inches. The larger screen now protrudes from the dashboard rather than sitting flush within it.

The system continues to use Google-based software, with Gemini added to provide better natural-language requests.

Volvo Upgrades the XC40 Safety Hardware

The most substantial changes are found in the XC40’s safety technology. Volvo has overhauled the SUV’s entire sensor suite to bring it in line with the rest of its lineup.

The company replaced the front and rear radars, front camera and parking cameras while adding 12 new ultrasonic sensors. The additional hardware enables several new capabilities.

  • Door Opening Alert
  • A proper 3D 360-degree camera view
  • Pilot Assist capable of handling lane changes on its own

EX40 Omission Points to a Bigger Change

Volvo’s announcement of the refreshed XC40 does not mention the EX40, the all-electric version of the XC40 formerly sold as the XC40 Recharge.

That omission aligns with an Automotive News report claiming the EX40 will not return. Autoblog’s own reporting says Volvo is already planning a replacement called the EX50.

The EX50 is scheduled to arrive in fall 2027 and will be built on the newer SPA3 platform shared with the EX60, replacing the aging CMA platform used by both the current EX40 and gas-powered XC40.

EX50 Planned as a Cheaper Electric Replacement

The EX50 is expected to be priced in the high-$40,000 range, substantially below the current EX40’s $56,545 starting price.

It is also likely to exceed the EX40’s maximum 296-mile range, thanks to the SPA3 platform’s 800-volt electrical architecture.

The move comes as Volvo has posted steep U.S. sales declines this year and is leaning heavily on newer, more efficient platforms to reverse that trend.

2027 Volvo XC40 Powertrain and Pricing

Volvo has not yet announced pricing for the 2027 XC40. The outgoing 2026 model starts at $41,295 delivered.

The refreshed XC40 is expected to reach customers in early 2027. It will continue with the same 2.0-liter mild-hybrid turbo-four engine, producing 197 horsepower in front-wheel-drive form and 247 horsepower with all-wheel drive.
