BMW is facing a class action lawsuit from owners alleging that the front differential in certain xDrive all-wheel-drive vehicles can fail prematurely despite being described as using lifetime fluid.

The Case Against BMW

The lawsuit claims BMW advised owners that changing the front differential fluid was no longer necessary because it was expected to last the lifetime of the vehicle. Previously, BMW had recommended changing the fluid, but by the mid-2010s, the company allegedly changed its guidance.

The case identifies three BMW models as being affected by the alleged premature front differential failures: the G05 X5, G06 X6 and G07 X7. The lawsuit does not specify model years, but it refers to vehicles produced through 2025.

What the Plaintiffs Allege

According to the case file, front differential failures generally occur after 50,000 miles or four years, when BMW NA’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty no longer covers the repair.

The plaintiffs claim owners are instead forced to pay thousands of dollars to BMW NA and its authorized dealers for replacement front differentials. They argue that the costs benefit BMW NA and its dealerships while creating a financial burden for owners.

The plaintiffs also allege that the front differentials failed prematurely despite BMW’s assurance regarding lifetime fluid. They emphasized that while the front differentials did not require fluid changes, the rear differentials did.

The lawsuit further alleges that BMW’s approach to front differential fluid was “part of a marketing strategy that was aimed to tout lower service costs and less frequent and onerous service intervals for the Class Vehicles.”

Previous BMW xDrive Lawsuit

This is not the first class action lawsuit involving BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. In December 2025, another lawsuit alleged that a transfer case defect caused drivability issues and left owners facing repair bills in the five digits.

The latest case centers on allegations that BMW’s front differentials can fail prematurely despite the company’s guidance regarding lifetime fluid and the absence of recommended fluid changes.
